Marc Staal netted the game-winning goal in overtime as the New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Monday night in Game 5 of their second-round series.
What a whirlwind finish for the Blueshirts, and they need to thank Joel Ward, who received a double-minor for high sticking with 22 seconds left, for their comeback. Down 2-1 with time winding down, it looked like the Rangers would be playing a do-or-die game in Washington with the series in the Caps' favor. Instead, the Rangers tied the game with seven seconds left in regulation on a Brad Richards power-play goal and Staal won it 1:35 into overtime on the second-half of the high-sticking double-minor. Staal also had an assist, while Anton Stralman scored the other marker. Derek Stepan, Ryan Callahan and Michael Del Zotto had the other assists. New York is one win away from advancing into the Eastern Conference finals.
