Gomez, who was participating in New Jersey's training camp on a professional tryout basis, failed to make the Opening Night roster, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports. He will, however, stick around with the team, despite not having a contract. The Devils came away highly impressed with Gomez's performance during training camp, but the lack of available spots at forward resulted in him getting caught up in a numbers game. He'll likely stick around with the team for another week or so to stay in shape in the event an injury strikes the team's forward ranks. Gomez's affinity for the organization from his time there during the Devils' two Stanley Cup runs likely motivated his decision to continue practicing with the team, rather than pursuing an opportunity elsewhere.
