DAILY PRIME TODAY: STEPAN SCORES, ST. LOUIS IS AMAZING AND MORE primepucks.com Sun 1/19/14 10:14 AM

Lots of games yesterday in the NHL with 13 played. There were several matinees starting with the Rangers and Ottawa.  New York has been playing a lot better recently.  Maybe Coach Alain Vigneault's system is finally kicking in.  There is certainly enough talent on the team.  They beat the Senators 4-1 in Otttawa.  The star of the game was Rangers' forward Derek Stepan who had a goal and 2 assists. Stepan had gone 13 straight games without a goal, so I am sure he is happy to get that monkey off his back.  With 30 points on the season though we can't recommend him unless you are really hurting at forward.  Young forward Mats Zuccarello had a goal for New York, and he has been hot lately with 10 points in his last 11 games...What can you say about Martin St. Louis? 4 goals last night despite the loss to San Jose.  Who says St. Louis can't score without Steven Stamkos? With 49 points this season he is still going strong.   Joe Pavelski had a big game himself for the Sharks with 3 goals. Pavelski has 48 points on the season, and is a top fantasy forward.  Patrick Marleau continued his solid season with a goal and 2 assists, and he has 46 points on the year. Rare off night for Tampa goalie Ben Bishop who allowed all 5 goals. He'll bounce back...Winnipeg beat Edmonton 3-2 in OT, and Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba had 2 goals, including the game winner. He has 16 points on the season, but in only 33 games.  You should pick him up if he is available in your league...Defenseman Tyler Myers had 2 goals for Buffalo in their loss to Columbus. Myers has 15 points on the season, so he is only worthwhile if you have injuries on defense.  Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky got the win with 26 saves, and he has won 5 straight games since returning from a groin strain. He should start for Russia in the Olympic games.   Kessel is king: Toronto forward Phil Kessel will be at the Olympics as well playing for the USA. He had a goal and an assist last night in the win over Montreal.  Kessel has 48 points on the season, and he is a premiere fantasy forward.  His linemate Joffrey Lupul had a goal and an assist as well, but with only 27 points on the season, he is not performing like last year. The other Henrik: We often talk about Rangers' goalie Henrik Lundqvist on this site, but there is another Henrik in the NHL, and that is Henrik Zetterberg of Detroit. Zetterberg had a goal and an assist last night in Detroit's shootout win over Los Angeles.  Zetterberg has 38 points in 37 games this year, and he is about as dependable a fantasy forward as they come. Mike Richards had a goal and an assist for LA, and he once scored 80 points for the Flyers in 2008-2009, but his production has declined, and he is more like a 55 point player now. Flyers fun: Philadelphia beat the Islanders 6-4 as defenseman Andrej Meszaros scored 2 goals. Mesaros has only 14 points on the season, but it comes in only 29 games played.  He has 5 points in his last 3 games so he may be a good short term pick-up if you need help on defense.  Flyers forward Claude Giroux had 2 assists, and after a miserable start to the season, he is slowly climbing up to a point per game player with 44 points. No Olympics for him though. Anton is still shining: Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin seems determined to grab the number one goaltender spot. With Cam Ward still hurt, and his back-up Justin Peters struggling a bit, Khudobin is getting his opportunity and he is making the most of it. He had 37 saves last night as the Hurricanes beat the Panthers.  At 7-2-1 with a 2.00 goals against and a .937 save percentage, he is doing all one can ask.  More fantasy news: Anaheim beat St. Louis 3-2 as Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist. The guy is just having a monster year.  Frederik Andersen got the win in goal for the Ducks, and his numbers are pretty darn good at 12-2-0 with a 1.99 goals against and a .929 save percentage, but Jonas Hiller is the starter...Goaltender Devan Dubnyk has not started his new career in Nashville in style as he allowed all 5 goals in a loss to Colorado with only 24 saves. The trade for Dubnyk indicated that the Predators do not expect Pekka Rinne back this season. Despite allowing 4 goals Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov got the win, number 24 on the year, and he is having a great season...Keith Yandle is a top fantasy defenseman, and he had 2 assists last night as Phoenix beat New Jersey. Yandle has 32 points on the year now.  Great season!  Phoenix center Martin Hanzal had a goal and an assist, and while he can go really cold for an extended period, he is good to own when he gets hot like now...Well we may have a changing of the guard for the Minnesota goal situation. Darcy Kuemper had 33 saves in goal for the Wild as he won his second stright game. Keep an eye on this one as Josh Harding is out and Niklas Backstrom has struggled, creating a great opportunity for Kuemper... Well they eventually played a hockey game between Vancouver and Calgary, but it sure took awhile, as it took a whopping 2 seconds to have the game descend into total chaos. Wow!  Like the old Boston/Philadelphia days.  Ryan Kesler had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, but with 31 points on the season, we can't recommend him. With Cory Schneider gone to New Jersey, Roberto Luongo has been having a good season with 17 wins and a 2.22 goals against.
