There were 10 games in the NHL last night and there is a lot to report on. Let me start out with Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan who was hit in the head by Boston defenseman Dennis Seidenberg and was forced to leave the game. Ryan had been enjoying a solid season with the Senators, so this is a big loss if he is out for a while. Columbus forward Marian Gaborik has a knee sprain, and he is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
Miller time:
Solid effort last night in goal by Ryan Miller of Buffalo with 32 saves as he outdueled goaltender Jonathan Bernier of Toronto in a 3-1 win. Miller had 32 saves and was very sharp. He has won his last 2 games, and Buffalo looks more focused after their GM and Coaching changes. Miller had 32 saves last night, and while he is only 4-11 on the season, he may be someone to store on your bench. Sabre defenseman Christian Ehroff got his first goal of the season, even if it was an emptynetter. Tis guy has been a big disappointment with only 5 points on the season.
Quick who?:
It may be Miller time in Buffalo, but its Scrivens time in LA. Kings goaltender Ben Scrivens was really flashing the leather last night in a shutout of the admittedly offensively challenged New Jersey Devils. Scrivens had 26 saves, and it looks like he will fill in nicely for Jonathan Quick while he is out. Kings forward Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist, and with 19 points in 20 games he is having a nice comeback year. Devils goaltender Cory Schneider played well, but he remains stuck at only one win this season. Nightmare year for him.
The real Neal:
Pittsburgh forward James Neal is back, and back with a vengence as he scored a goal and an assist last night. His linemate Evgeni Malkin was clearly invigorated as he scored 2 assists. Look for these guys to start lighting it up going forward. Nashville has thanfully completed the end of a 7 game road trip, but with Pekka Rinna out their goaltending is a mess as neither Hutton or Mazanec look to be any type of solution. Solid effort by Marc-Andre Fleury in goal for Pittsburgh, although he only had to make 17 saves. Fleury has good numbers with a 11-5 record a 2.00 goals against and a .922 save percentage. He is a top goaltender.
Staal scores:
The Hurricanes stole one from the suddenly struggling Ducks with a 3-2 win in a shootout. Justin Peters was sharp in goal for Carolina with 28 saves. Peters has been playing well although his record is only 4-5-1, but his numbers are good with a 2.29 goals against and a .923 save percentage. Peters is going to be the man until Cam Ward comes back. He is a good second tier goalie oprtion right now. But the news of the game was Hurricane forward Eric Staal scoring a power play goal. Staal has only 10 points on the season, but he is too good to keep playing this poorly. See if you can get him.
David who?:
In what seems like an endless amount of shutouts last night, the Canadiens beat the Blue Jackets 3-2 in, yes, a shootout. Now hold on to your seats. Montreal forward David Desharnais scored the game winning goal in the shootout. Desharnais has exactly one assists on the season in 18 games played. With those kind of numbers he has spent some time this year in the press box, but the got the game winner yesterday. This guy is a major disappointment. On a happier note young Canadien forward Lars Eller scored a power play goal. Eller, also, had 8 shots on goal and led the team in power play time with 4:12 minutes. He is being given every chance to succeed. Grab him if you can.
Ryan out:
Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan received an elbow to the head at the end of last night's game against the Bruins, and he was forced to leave the game. Ryan had been playing well this season for the Senators, so this is a big blow to fantasy owners. Hopefully, he won't be out that long. Forward Jason Spezza had a good game with a goal and an assist for Ottawa. Spezza has 18 points now in 18 games played, and if he stays healthy that is about what you should expect from him. Monster Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson had an assist, and he has 19 points on the season, scoring like a forward.
More fantasy notes:
Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom scored the game winner in what was another shootout, yesh, 4-3 over Detroit. Backstrom had an assist and 6 shots on goal during regulation, and he is having a solid year with 21 points in 20 games. The "mule" Detroit forward Johan Franzen had a big game last night with a2 goals and an assist, but he is way to streaky to pickup, and he has only 9 points on the season. The more interesting Red Wing is young defenseman Danny DeKeyser who had a goal and an assist last night. DeKeyser has only 8 points on the season, but he might not be a bad 4th defenseman option. Take a look at him, he is only going to get better. Young center Michael Latta scored his first NHL goal last night. Always like to see that...The pommer comes through again as Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist in Minnesota's 3-2 win over Florida. The pommer now has 12 goals and 16 points on the season in 20 games played. Start piling up those assists pommer because you are doing great with goal scoring. Wild forward Dany Heatley had no points and he has only 4 points on the season. Boy has this guy fallen off a cliff. Minnesota goalie Josh Harding continued his stellar play with 22 saves. Harding is now 11-2-2 with an NHL leading 1.26 goals against. He is a top fantasy goaltender...in another shootout Winnipeg beat the Flyers 3-2. Can I go long shootouts somehow? Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglein had 2 power play goals. We are very high on Byfuglein, and he is used by the Jets somewhat differently than the normal defenseman, as they let him go agressively behind the other teams net and let a forward fall back to cover for him. He has 14 points so far this year in 20 games played...Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist in San Jose's 3-1 win over Edmonton. Marleau is having a solid season with 10 goals and 20 points in 20 games. He had 6 shots on goal last night and led the team with 5:39 power play minutes. Grab him if you can.
