On a night where three goaltenders stole the spotlight with spectacular shutout efforts, Toronto's Jonathan Bernier 36-save blanking of Nashville was the most relevant to fantasy owners. Despite the thorough stonewashing of the Stanley Cup runnerup Boston Bruins, veteran J.S. Giguere (39 svs) will continue to back up Semyon Varlamov in Colorado, while Jonas Hiller of Anaheim (34 svs) has probably seen better days. The future belongs to 25-year old Jonathan Bernier, after being traded to Toronto during the offseason, has finally eluded the shadows of Jonathan Quick back in Los Angeles. Granted, there is still a semblance of a goaltending competition going on in "Leaf Land", but the young French Canadien native is making it extremely difficult for the Leafs not to hand him the starting job. After four games, he has posted a 3-1 record with a .84 GAA and a .974 SP. If you closely examine his numbers backing up Quick the last three years, the signs of eventual greatness were ever so clear. During that span, his record stood at 25-17-6, while his GAA dipped from 2.48 to 1.82. From a pure fantasy standpoint, Bernier is close to joining the elite ranks, but he will need to supplant James Reimer first as Toronto's no. 1. The goalie-by-committee approach might last a while longer in Toronto, but Bernier will quickly become fantasy gold in all league formats. Stamkos Delivers The Goods: In the 7-2 Lightning blowout of the Florida Panthers, superstar Steven Stamkos has his first breakout game of the NHL season, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist. With three goals and six points in 4 games, the league's most fearsome sniper is again the odds-on favorite to lead the NHL in goals... Tampa Bay's captain Martin St. Louis continues to defy Father Time with a goal and an assist, raising his point total to five points in four games. The reigning Art Ross Trophy winner shoud again be good for another 80+ point season.. Ben Bishop wins his third straight in goal, allowing only two goals on 21 shots. He is starting to leave Anders Lindback in the dust, while the Lightning starting job is still officially up for grabs. We have Bishop as our 15th ranked fantasy goalie, so we have already made up our mind. Other Fantasy Notes: Winnipeg's Tobias Enstrom is quietly off to a great start, collecting an assist last night and extending his point streak to four games. Not known for shooting the puck, the diminutive Swede continues to rack up assists at a high rate. As underrated as they come, only injuries can keep him from top-ten fantasy status.. Devan Dubnyk continues to struggle in the Edmonton crease, giving up 3 goals on 26 shots in the 4-1 loss to Calgary. His stats after three games: 0-3. 5.28 GAA, and .842 SP. What's the Oilers to do? Tough call for them, but fantasy owners need to start their third option until he rights the ship. By the way he is playing, that's not a certainty though.. Watch RW Cam Atkinson, who displayed instant chemistry with Marian Gaborik on the top line by scoring a goal and an assist in Columbus' 4-1 win over Buffalo.
