Ten games yesterday in the NHL, so we have a lot to go through. There were 3 afternoon games starting with Ottawa and Carolina. The Hurricanes rolled over the Senators 6-3, but the offensive stars for Carolina were somewhat suprising. Manny Malhotra had 2 goals and an assist, dramatically increasing his season point totals to 11 points. Nathan Gerbe had a goal and 2 assists, but he is not fantasy worthy with 25 points on the season. One who is fantasy worthy is Hurricane defenseman Andrej Sekera who had 2 assists yesterday, and he has been hot with 6 points in his last 3 games. He now has 30 points on the season, and you should grab him if you need help on defense. Alex Semin had 2 assists to stay hot. He has 5 points in his last 3 games. Anton Khudobin had 23 saves for the win, and he is now 10-3-0 on the season. Cam who? Kyle Turris had 2 goals for Ottawa and with 40 points on the season he is a decent 6th forward option. The Blues beat the Islanders 4-3 in a shootout, as St Louis defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored the winner. Young right wing Vladimir Tarasenko had 2 goals for the Blues, but with 31 points on the year we can't recommend him yet. The 22 year old will get better though. Another win in goal for Jaroslav Halak, who now has 22 on the year. Boston goalie Tuukka Rask broke out of his slump with a strong game as Boston drubbed Philadelphia 6-1. Rask had 25 saves and he looked very sharp. Jarome Iginla had a big game for the Bruins with 2 goals and 2 assists. Just like the old days in Calgary. Still Iginla has only 33 points on the season. Boston d-man Zdeno Chara had 2 power play goals as the Bruins used his big body down low on the PP. His production would increase if they keep using him that way. Dave Krejci had 3 assists for Boston, and with 42 points he is a decent 6th option at forward. He is mostly an assist guy though.
Capital suprise: In a bit of a surprise 2 unusual things happened in Washington's 5-0 win over Montreal; the Capitals scored some goals and goalie Braden Holtby pitched a shutout with 21 saves. Washington was aided by the return of star forward Alexander Ovechkin who had missed several games with an LBI. Ovechkin contributed immediately with a goal and an assist. Carey Price continued his slump in goal for the Canadians, and he was pulled after allowing 4 goals. He has lost 4 of his last 5 games.
Lightning strikes: Tampa Bay beat Colorado 5-2, as Lightning goalie Ben Bishop continued his amazing season with 25 saves and the win. Bishop's numbers are outstanding with a 25-6-4 with a 1.96 goals against and a .934 save percentage. Diminutive center Tyler Johnson had a huge game with 3 goals, his first ever hat trick. Johsno has been hot lately with 5 points in 3 games. He has 34 points on the year. Tampa defenseman Victor Hedman had 3 assists, and he now has 32 points on the season. After a slow start to his career the 23 year old, who was the second overall pick in the 2009 draft is really coming on strong. Young Avalanche goalie Sami Aittokallio was pulled in his first start of the year after giving up 3 goals. He played because JS Giguere is injured. Better days ahead Sami.
Bobrovsky gets pulled: Well we all have a bad game every now and then. After winning 9 straight games Sergei Bobrovsky took the loss as Columbus' lost to Buffalo of all teams. There were a lot of suprises in the NHL last night. He was pulled after allowing 3 goals on only 10 shots. He will bounce right back. Sabre defenseman Christian Ehroff had a goal and 2 assists. He has been a disappointment with only 22 points on the season. Maybe he is turning it around? Keep an eye on him. Ryan Miller looked like the Miller of old with a 36 save win. While his record is mediocre his save percentage has held up real well at .926.
Reimer gets pulled too: Toronto goalie James Reimer has been in a dogfight all year long with Jonathan Bernier for the top spot in goal for the Maple Leafs. Bernier had been seeing more ice time recently, but he got bombed in the last game against Dallas. So last night Reimer got his chance with a start against Winnipeg. The result is that he was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 19 shots. Expect Bernier to be back in goal. Winnipeg center Bryan Little had a goal and an assist for the Jets, and with 44 points he is fantasy worthy.
What the heck?: Speaking of suprises, the Dallas Stars struggling goalie Kari Lehtonen shut out the high powered Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0. Even Hollywood could not have scripted this one. Lehtonen had 24 saves to increase his record to 20-14-8. Hopefully this win will get him back on track. Jamie Benn had a PPG for Dallas, and he is having a solid year with 46 points.
More fantasy news: In the NHL's big extravagant outdoor event in Los Angeles, and I mean big if any of you saw the pregame activities, the Ducks shut out the Kings 3-0. Jonas Hiller was terrific in goal for Anaheim as Los Angeles carried the play for most of the game. Hiller had to make 36 saves while his counterpart Jonathan Quick saw only 20 shots. Hiller now has 24 wins on the year. Corey Perry got the game winner, his 28th goal and 57th point on the season. Big Joe Thornton increased his goal scoring percentage by 33% yesterday, as he scored 2 goals including the game winner in overtime as San Jose beat Minnesota 3-2. Thornton has 8 goals and 47 assists on the year. Joe Pavelski had 2 assists to continue his great season. He has 53 points this year. Antti Niemi made 20 saves to earn his 27th win. Logan Couture has begun to rehab from his hand surgery, but there is no timetable for his return.
