NOTE: Steve's ISD will be back tomorrow for a look at the top 5 fantasy defensemen over the last month. Here is another little taste of one of our premium articles, UNDER THE RAYDAR, which focuses on up-and-coming fantasy stars which may not have gotten any notice, or are on the verge of making an impact in the NHL.  Only available as a PRIME+PLUS subscriber, here is a piece on NY Islander Joshua Bailey: 10/18/13". Enjoy!: UNDER THE RAYDAR: Joshua Bailey-C-New York Islanders October 18, 2013 Everyone in fantasy hockey knows of John Tavares, and everyone in fantasy hockey has been waiting for Kyle Okposo to breakout. There are those who know how well Matt Moulson has done being on the wing of JT.  There are those who stare in awe at the speed of Michael Grabner but sigh at his lack of consistency.  As everyone's eyes have been focused on these bright and talented Islanders, there are other Islanders who should at least be on someone's watch list.  In the pre-season, everyone had thought it was time for Ryan Strome to make the jump to the big leagues, me included.  Maybe that time will come during the season.  There was another player who piqued my interest this year but I did not follow through on it with much conviction, although in the 2013-2014 Fantasy Draft Guide, we did predict him making a leap forward in production. The New York Islanders and GM Garth Snow have been waiting for 24 year old Josh Bailey to take the next step in his NHL career. He was drafted #9 overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft after a spectacular season with the Windsor Spitfire of the OHL.  His Spitfire team mates that year were Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique and Ryan Ellis among others.  Would you believe that Mr. Bailey actually led that bunch in scoring? Even beating out Taylor Hall? Well he did and you know how highly touted Mr. Hall is. John Tavares was drafted #1 overall the following year, which took all the attention away from Josh Bailey, leaving him to grow under JT's shadow. Bailey led that Spitfire team with 96 points in 67 games, outscoring Hall by 12 points, who played in 4 fewer games. The year prior, Bailey scored 61 in 69 games splitting time between Windsor and the Owen Sound Attack.  In four years of OHL play, the young Center had 183 points in 191 games.  Not too shabby.  So why is Bailey not recognized as an extremely talented offensive center?  With the Isles getting the number 1 overall in 2009, a lot of the focus was placed immediately on Tavares as being the savior. The Islanders slotted Bailey into the NHL lineup right away and he played 68 games that first season, scoring 7-18-25 by playing with players who were beyond their prime years such as Doug Weight and Bill Guerin. The next season, #1 pick Tavares was inserted into the lineup along with trade acquisition Matt Moulson creating a lot of hoopla that those two along with Okposo would be a dynamic first line but that really didn't come to fruition.  Joshua Bailey, again, in the shadows learning the game without a lot of pressure.  He managed to increase his point total by 10 that year, but the whole team was going through growing pains. In 2010-2011, the team was getting younger but you could see that Tavares was going to be a superstar in the near future. JT was still clicking with Moulson, but Bailey took a bit of a step back, scoring just 28 points in 70 games.  He spent part of that year in the AHL trying to find his game.  2011-2012 saw his return to the Island, but the production did not meet expectations.  Was management growing tired of waiting for Bailey to breakout?  Perhaps the Lockout season was a blessing in disguise for Bailey.  With a shortened season, the team could take one final look at their core of budding young talent and see what would need to be weeded out and which ones were ready for the next step. In that Lockout season, Bailey played in Germany where he apparently suffered an injury but did not disclose that with the NY Islanders. That promptly caused Bailey to be suspended by the club, further clouding his future with them.  When Bailey did finally return to play, it took a while for him to gain his legs.  In 13 April games, Josh scored 10 points as the Islanders made the playoffs for the first time after missing them the previous 5 seasons.  But where does Joshua Bailey fit in on this emerging Islanders club? Through the first 7 games this season Bailey has 7 points but what is more eye-opening is that in his past 2 games, he has taken 9 shots on goal. Although only 1 of those points has come on the power play, he is getting some PP time, so the points will come.  His current line mates are Frans Nielsen and Pierre-Marc Bouchard which gives him some grit and experienced players to play alongside but I think Bailey is ready to be that all-around, #2 Center who can put up some good numbers.  He may never be that point-per-game player, but if all goes right, 60 points is not out of the question. ICE POPS: Tye One On---The Philadelphia Flyers are struggling at the start of this season as they try to acclimate themselves to new Head Coach Craig Berube's system. It doesn't help that they have been beset by injuries.  Claude Giroux has started the season on time even though he is recovering from a wrist injury, which shows in his stats. Giroux has only 3 points in 8 games, all assists, and all coming in the last 3 games.  So perhaps he is heating up.  Vincent Lecavalier and Scott Hartnell will miss time with injuries. Kimmo Timonen left last night's game with an injury. This opens up opportunities for someone.  Tye McGinn was called up and has scored 3 goals in his first 3 games but held scoreless last night with 0 SOG. Monitor the next few games to see if this big (6'3", 207 lbs.) forward can gel with Giroux and Jakub Voracek. Tye, in 3 years with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL scored 156 points in 140 games so the talent is there.  John Leclair anyone?  Stash him away if you are in deep dynasty leagues....UTR REDUX---Some players who might still be under the radar include some past alumni of the UTR. Players such as Ted Purcell (8 pts., 7 gms), Tyler Johnson (4, 7) & Alex Killorn (6, 7) of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Alex Chiasson (6, 6) of the Dallas Stars, Cam Atkinson (4, 6) of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Cody Franson (6, 8) of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Nino Niederreiter (4, 8) of the Minnesota Wild. All are receiving quality ice time along with putting up some points.  Some are at a point-per-game clip while some are at a .5 ppg clip or higher.  The future bodes well for these past featured players.
