DAILY PRIME- AUGUST 29, 2014: SCHULTZ INKS ONE-YEAR DEAL primepucks.com Fri 8/29/14 1:58 PM

After the Edmonton Oilers and offensive defenseman Justin Schultz having agreed to a one-year/$3.675 million extension, it is evident that the third-year pro has been placed in "prove it to me" mode for the upcoming season. He did record 11 goals and 33 points in 74 games, but his -22 rating was of more concern to an Oiler club perenially suffering in the goals-against department. Fantasy owners need to upgrade Schultz on their pre-draft lists as the slick rearguard will be motivated to put in a more dominant effort in order to a collect a larger pay-day. Yes, more gains in his defensive game will be a priority, but a stronger all-around effort will land him top minutes on a nightly basis. With the Edmonton talented trio of Hall, Eberle, and RNH approaching breakout seasons, Schultz will surely benefit from improved offensive production and a more potent power play. In his rookie season, where he picked up 27 points in 48 games, over half of his scoring production- 15 pts.- came with the man-advantage. His power-play points regressed to 11 last year while playing 26 more contests. Any improvements in that area of the Oiler's offense in '14-'15 will surely be a boon to Schultz's fantasy value. Taking motivation and an expected power-play improvement into account, it's safe to assume that Schultz gets into the 40-45 point range in Year 3 as Edmontons' most prized offensive d-man. Take him in the middle rounds with plenty of confidence as his top-ten upside is too good to pass up.
