Butler was called up from AHL Chicago under emergency conditions Sunday, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The Notes have several injured forwards but Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) is the only ailing defenseman. Nonetheless, Butler will step in for the regular-season finale against the Avalanche. He's the type that seems to be too good for the AHL -- fashioning five goals and 20 assists with the Wolves this season -- but rarely counted on for a substantial role at hockey's highest level.
