Boll said he's been working feverishly this summer to increase his explosiveness and maintain a regular role in the Blue Jackets' lineup, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Boll, the longest-tenured player in the organization, was once valued for his willingness to drop his gloves and provide added toughness to the fourth line, but the league's increased emphasis on moving away from fighting has placed a higher premium on speed and skill. With only one goal and five points in 72 games last season, Boll simply doesn't offer much ability on the offensive end, which may have been a large reason why he took seven healthy scratches in 2014-15, including each of the last five games. Boll will need to demonstrate in training camp that he can make up for his lack of scoring prowess by being a menace defensively, which may be enough for him to get the nod in the lineup on most occasions over Rene Bourque, his primary competition for right-wing duties on the Jackets' fourth line.
