BETWEEN THE PIPES: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH START primepucks.com Tue 10/21/14 7:15 PM

When I was trying to decide on which team's goaltending I should write about to help you in your fantasy pools, I looked at all the bottom dwelling teams and found it very difficult to choose one so I put on some Victim Of Changes by Judas Priest and got inspired. Lots of teams made changes to their creases for this year, some even starting at last year's trading deadline.  For those looking for goaltending help, which net minder is going to give you the best bang for your buck? Colorado has started off 1-4-1 with 5 of the games played away from home so you know they will get some good home cooking soon. Plus the Avalanche were expected to do well again this year after last season's surprise run and playoff appearance, so Semyon Varlamov is already counted on and drafted pretty high. We all know that buffalo, Florida, Carolina and unexpectedly Edmonton may be playing for the Connor McDavid sweepstakes, if their early play is any indication.  Winnipeg is supposedly better than they have shown so far so they should begin to string together some wins.  But there is one team that is struggling which is not customary considering its head coach.  Even with the name change, the Coyotes should be playing better in front of their goaltenders, especially with Mike Smith in net. The Arizona Coyotes' season began with a four game home stand and a chance to get off to good start in the tough Western Conference. The Yotes had 2 games against top teams in LA and St. Louis and 2 against Winnipeg and Edmonton and came away with 4 points.  After losing their home opener against the Jets 6-2, they rebounded to defeat the defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings in overtime, 3-2.  5 or 6 points would have been a successful start because every point is crucial playing in this conference.  If Arizona is dreaming of having a shot at a playoff spot, they will have to tighten things up and get better goaltending from their duo. This is Head Coach Dave Tippett's 6th season with the Coyotes and he has missed the playoffs the past two seasons so the leash may be short for a coach who has been known for his defensive style of play, which is good for goalies. Smith's first year in Phoenix, he posted his best numbers going 38-18-10 with a .930 SP and a 2.21 GAA, but unfortunately he hasn't been able to reach those numbers since.  With those types of numbers, you know what he is capable of, he just needs to find his consistency.  Last year's punching bag in net, Devan Dubnyk, signed on to back up Smith and played well in his Coyote debut with the overtime win against LA. It's only one game and Dubnyk has teased us before, so don't count on him stealing the number 1 job from Smith.  Out of all the teams we have mentioned so far, Smith and Arizona seem the most likely to pull things together and play better hockey. Other teams like the Florida Panthers, even though they have a veteran in Roberto Luongo, have a young and inexperienced team in front of him, so you know he will be light in the win column. Buffalo has an untested Jhonas Enroth as the starter with Washington outcast Michal Neuvirth as the backup, plus they are a team in a rebuild.   Carolina's Cam Ward seems to have lost his edge since his injury and hasn't done much on an injury riddled Hurricanes team. Anton Khudobin had played spectacular last year in Ward's place, but the jury is still out if he can perform consistently since the most games he ever played in a season was the 38 he played last year, eclipsing his previous high of 14 the year prior. Edmonton's goaltending seems to be in disarray as does the whole team, Ben Scrivens doesn't seem to be the answer as the number 1 and either does Viktor Fasth. With GAAs of 4.11 and 5.19 respectively before Monday night's game, perhaps a veteran free-agent signing is in store. Winnipeg's Ondrej Pavelec continues to disappoint the coaching staff no matter what system they play in front of him. So, out of all this mess, the only reasonable goalie who has a shot of turning his season around and quickly appears to be Arizona's Mike Smith. That's who I would target if I needed help in the goaltending department because you could probably get Smith on the cheap because of his slow start and giving up 16 goals in 3 starts. And last year he only posted a 27-21-10 record so owners will definitely sour on him easily.  So if you're desperate for some goaltending, try and grab him from a disgruntled owner, but don't pay a lot.  Gee, I would hardly give up a bag of pucks for him at this point.  POST MARKS: The opportunity to grab Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist relatively cheap has probably passed after his shutout of the San Jose Sharks on Sunday afternoon. Nonetheless, you can try to trade for him before he becomes too expensive....Anaheim G Frederik Andersen has probably solidified his position as the number 1 net minder as he has gone 5-0-0 with 1.38 GAA and a .950 SP along with a shutout.  Team mate John Gibson was sent down to the HL last weekend to get in some game time but it looks like its Andersen's crease for now....Even though Montreal G Carey Price is 4-1-0, his metrics aren't that great yet at 3.38 GAA and a .890 SP. You just know that he will get back to his career average over the course of time as the 5 games is such a small sample size.  However, mention those statistics to a nervous fantasy owner and you just might be able to whisk him away....With the way the Calgary Flames have been playing so far this season, Jonas Hiller might not be a bad number 2 on your fantasy team. The only thing is that with his injury history, Karri Ramo will probably split starts with the veteran for a while.....If you are looking for a goalie who will probably play most of his team's games this year look no further than the New York Islanders and their starter Jaroslav Halak. With the Isles being a much improved team, Halak will be the beneficiary of all that offense.
