Bernier signed a professional tryout contract with the Islanders on Wednesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Coming off a season in which he tallied a career-high 16 goals, it's a bit surprising Bernier wasn't able to earn a guaranteed contract in free agency, but it may have been a byproduct of teams fading his unsustainable 15.0 percent shooting rate. Even so, Bernier will could be a viable competitor for a third- or fourth-line role in training camp with the Isles, but perhaps more importantly, he'll give the organization some leverage while they work to negotiate a new contract for restricted free agent Brock Nelson.
