Backstrom stopped all 12 shots in 30 minutes in Monday's preseason loss to Winnipeg. Backstrom underwent season-ending abdominal and hip surgery in March, but looked back to full strength. He'll battle Darcy Kuemper and possibly Ilya Bryzgalov for the starting role, but has to be considered the favorite at this point.
