Backlund sustained a concussion while playing for Team Sweden at the World Cup of Hockey, so his return to the ice Thursday is a positive indication of the progress he's made in his recovery from that injury. The 27-year-old center likely won't be cleared for game action in time for Friday's preseason matchup with Vancounver, but may be in the lineup for Sunday's exhibition against the Jets. Either way, it appears as though the 2007 first-round pick is on track to be fully healthy ahead of the Flames' Oct. 12 regular-season opener against Edmonton.
