An incident between Johan Franzen and Chris Neil during Thursday's contest has turned into a war of words.
Neil tried to pick a fight with Franzen late in the game. Detroit winning was already a foregone conclusion at that point and Franzen was the hero with a hat trick. All the same, Neil tried to provoke Franzen, to the point of taking off his helmet. Franzen had returned from a concussion only days before and said that Neil is the type that likes to swoop in and play the hero after a game's already been decided. Neil responded by saying that he's willing to fight Franzen any time he wants to "drop his purse" and went on to call Franzen "gutless." This is a grade school-level exchange that is, at best, a deliberate attempt on both of their parts to get under the other's skin and maybe hinder their on-ice performance. They're not playing each other again this season and aren't likely to meet in the playoffs, but Detroit and Ottawa are competing for the same Wild Card spot.
