Alexei Kovalev said he spoke with the Panthers before the 2011-12 season about playing with the organization. He was apparently offered a tryout deal by GM Dale Tallon, but for whatever reason it didn't work out. "The situation changed a little bit and I couldn't wait anymore so I went to Russia," said Kovalev. "I guess the offer still stands and they decided I could come back. I want to get back in the NHL. They're going to give me a chance, see how things go." He said he is fully recovered from a knee injury that bothered him in 2011-12 when he played briefly in the KHL and he is ready to compete in the NHL's abbreviated season this year.
