Erik Karlsson is on pace to set two Ottawa scoring records. Both are held by Norm MacIver. The first is most assists in a season by a rearguard. MacIver holds the mark with 46. After 42 games thus far, Karlsson has registered 34 helpers. The second, is most points in a season by a defenceman. MacIver's total was 63. Karlsson now has 39 points. The young Swede is certainly having a magical campaign and he is clearly establishing himself as one of the NHL's best young blueliners.

The Senators are hoping that Erik Karlsson gets some consideration for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top defenseman. He is almost at a point-per-game pace (37 points in 40 games) and has a six-point lead over second-place Brian Campbell in defenseman scoring. Karlsson, who is only 21, may have to wait a little longer for Norris accolades despite his breakout campaign as voters tend to be conservative. No matter, Karlsson is having a monster fantasy campaign.

Erik Karlsson got two more assists on Monday. Karlsson now has 32 assists and 37 points in 40 games. He's opened up a six-point lead on Brian Campbell, who currently ranks second in the blueliners point scoring race. Karlsson has matched his previous career-high in assists with 42 games to go, and he should have no problem also shattering his previous career-high of 45 points in a single season.

Erik Karlsson became the first blueliner to reach the 30 assist mark on Friday. Only 29 defensemen in total ended up with 30 assists last season, but Karlsson didn't even need half a season to achieve that feat. Karlsson is also leading all defenseman with 35 points in 38 games. If Karlsson can maintain this pace, he'll become just the fourth blueliner to reach the 70-point mark in a single season since the lockout. The other three are Mike Green, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Sergei Zubov.

Erik Karlsson has 27 assists in 33 games, putting him in a tie with Henrik Sedin for first in the NHL. Karlsson was starting to show signs of cooling down ever so slightly when he registered three assists on Friday. He's dominating all offensive defensemen so far with 29 points in 33 games. However, his minus-four rating and his subpar numbers in other defensive categories might prevent him from being a serious contender for the Norris Trophy.

Erik Karlsson, who is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer, will probably point to Victor Hedman's recently signed five-year/$20 million contract extension when the Senators approach him. The two are very different kinds of blueliners, but they're both extremely valuable to their respective clubs and at roughly the same stage in their NHL careers. Karlsson is a pure offensive defenseman that only seems to be getting better. He set career-highs with 13 goals and 45 points in 75 games last season and he already has 22 points in 25 games this season. His plus/minus rating is an unappealing minus-three, but that's still leagues better than last season, when he was third worst in the NHL with a minus-30 rating.

Erik Karlsson's notched two helpers in the Ottawa Senators' 4-3 win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. Karlsson leads all NHL defensemen with 21 points and all players with 20 assists. While he isn't getting a lot of goals, Karlsson has taken 71 shots, so he's useful in more than just one category. Naturally, it would be nice if he could throw a few tallies in the mix with all those apples.

Erik Karlsson earned his 16th assist of the 2011-12 season, moving him into a three-way tie for the NHL lead with Daniel Sedin and Brian Campbell. Karlsson only has one goal to go with his many helpers, but it's not for a lack of trying. He has a resounding 65 shots on goal so far this season and while many of those likely resulted in rebound tallies, expect him to find the twine more often if he gets some bounces.
