Staal needed only 3:17 in the first period to net a goal in the victory. The 34-year-old center has taken a step back from his resurgent campaign last year, but still has 44 points in 64 games. More recently, he's registered seven points in his last five contests, although the streak comes after he went pointless in nine straight games.

Staal registered two secondary assists on the power play during Tuesday's win over the Jets.

The 34-year-old will continue to provide offensively in addition to helping the Wild maintain a veteran presence in the locker room, as the team keeps getting younger with the recent trade acquisitions of Ryan Donato and Kevin Fiala.

Staal helped the Wild snap a 171-minute goal drought with his assist on Jared Spurgeon's first-period tally, then added a second helper on Jordan Greenway's empty-netter. He was also largely responsible for Zach Parise's unassisted third-period goal, as Staal's uncalled trip on Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei forced Skjei to cough up the puck to Parise all alone in front. This effort snaps a nine-game point drought for the veteran center.

Staal is pointless while averaging 18:29 of ice time in his past five games.

The 34-year-old center has certainly slowed down following a 42-goal campaign in 2017-18. It's unclear what has led to the slump, but it's certainly not a lack of opportunity, as Staal has been averaging 2:51 of power-play time in his last five games. Though he's struggling as of late, it would be smart to stick with Staal, as he's still on track for his third straight 60-point campaign.

Staal began the year with 12 points in October, following that up with eight in November, and currently, Staal is sitting at just five points in 10 December games. His last multi-point performance was Nov. 21. Since that two-goal outing, the 34-year-old has recorded four goals and three assists.

Staal, along with the rest of his teammates, finished Thursday's 2-0 loss to Calgary without a point.

EDGE Analysis

The individual result wasn't for a lack of trying as Staal was able to fire four shots on goal, but Mike Smith was simply unbeatable Thursday. The 34-year-old center continues to enjoy another quality season, with 10 goals and 20 points in 27 games, and Staal should continue to produce on a somewhat consistent basis as long as he stays healthy.

Staal (illness) will be in action against the Kings on Thursday; telling reporters, "I feel good. I don't think I'm at 100 percent, but I definitely feel a lot better...good sweat today and hopefully a great game tonight."

Prior to getting sick, Staal racked up six points in his previous four outings. The 33-year-old seems to be getting better with age, as he has recorded back-to-back 60-plus point campaigns since joining the Wild and is on pace for another this year.
