Eric Nystrom has been traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for future considerations. The Stars needed to absorb his $1.4 million salary to get to the cap floor, so claiming him off waivers wouldn't be the right way to go for them. Nystrom should have a bottom-six role with the club upon his arrival.

It looks like the Minnesota Wild intend to keep Eric Nystrom on their active roster if he clears re-entry waivers. Any team who claims Nystrom will assume responsibility for just half of his annual cap hit. Typically when a team puts a veteran player on waivers and then quickly places him on re-entry waivers, the hope is that he gets claimed. However, Wild GM Chuck Fletcher claims that his team had different motivations. "He works hard, he plays center, wing; it gives us more versatility," Fletcher said. "We made the move earlier to create a little flexibility to take a look at some players, but the intention all along was for him to come back at some point. It just makes sense to do it now." The Wild already have 23 players on their active roster, so they need to make another move if Nystrom clears waivers. Stay tuned.

If Nystrom clears and there are no roster issues coming out of tonight's game at Ottawa, then Minnesota will make a roster move tomorrow. Nystrom played all 82 games with the Wild last season after spending all or part of four seasons with Calgary. He was 4-8-12 and minus-16.

Eric Nystrom has fully recovered after undergoing surgery in the off-season to repair a broken cheekbone. Nystrom played in all 82 games last season after breaking his cheekbone in a fight with Wayne Simmonds on December 11. "I looked like Elephant Man after the surgery for about three weeks," Nystrom said. Nystrom is looking to have a better season in 2011-12 as he had only four goals and 12 points with a minus-16 rating after signing with the Wild for three years after the 2009-10 season. Look for him to approach the 20 point mark but not have fantasy value in most pools.
