Murray has announced his retirement, Swedish paper Aftonbladet reports.
EDGE Analysis
Murray spent the first seven years of his NHL career playing with the San Jose Sharks before a midseason move to Pittsburgh in 2012-13 and a one-year stint with the Canadiens. In all, the 36-year-old saw action in 518 contests in which he was able to record seven goals and 57 assists. Selected in the eighth round of the 1999 NHL Draft, the blueliner will probably be best remembered for delivering bone-crushing hits to opponents.

Murray was released from his PTO with the Flames on Friday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Flames are pretty deep at defense, so it was hard to imagine a scenario where Murray secured a spot on the team's Opening Night roster. The 35-year-old defender hasn't played in an NHL contest since the 2013-14 season, and probably won't be suiting up for an NHL team in 2015-16.

Murray's tryout offer with the Flames was terminated Wednesday. The organization's concern about its blue line depth prompted the team to bring Murray in for a look, but management came to the conclusion that the 35-year-old wasn't a fit for the Flames. Murray, who skated in 53 games for the Canadiens in 2013-14, may not have many opportunities left to find work in the NHL.

Murray agreed to a professional tryout offer with the Flames on Friday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports. With Mark Giordano and Ladislav Smid lost to season-ending injuries, the Flames will bring Murray in and attempt to see if he still has something left in the tank to offer the squad. While he wouldn't be eligible for the postseason should the Flames ink him to a contract, Murray could potentially provide a depth option to help keep the team's blue line fresh during the stretch run. The 35-year-old has spent this season with German squad Kolner Haie, posting one assist in eight games before opting out of his contract.

Murray signed a contract with Kolner Haie of the German League on Tuesday. The 34-year-old is expected to make his debut for the team Thursday after he failed to latch on with an NHL squad this season. The 34-year-old has produced 64 points and 412 PIM over his 518 career NHL games.

Doug Murray is expected to become an unrestricted free agent in July. There hasn't been an official announcement from the team, but it's being reported that the Canadiens have decided not to offer him a contract. In 53 games for Montreal in 2013-14, he recorded two assists, 144 blocks, 115 blocks and a minus-12 rating.

Doug Murray was left feeling "disappointed" following Montreal's elimination from the playoffs. "I would have love to contribute more," he said. "I'm not satisfied." Murray appeared in only three games during the Canadiens' postseason run that ended in the Eastern Conference Final. He played in 53 contests during the regular season. Murray can become an unrestricted free agent in July.

Although many Habs' fans love to blame Doug Murray for everything, it was not the defenseman's fault the Bruins won Game 4 in overtime while he was on the ice. Murray, who was paired with Mike Weaver, had a strong game and earned the praise of Montreal coach Michel Thetrien. Of Murry and Weaver, Therrien had this to say: "They [Murray and Weaver] were physical, blocked shots, contained well... (They) did a fantastic job for us." So Canadiens' fans give Murray a break for once.

Doug Murray skated on Montreal's third pairing at practice on Monday. He was paired with Mike Weaver, which made Francis Bouillon the odd man out. However, it isn't clear if this change will made for Game 3. Murray hasn't played in a playoff game with the Canadiens yet after he appeared in 53 games during the regular season.

Douglas Murray may see some more playing time in round two of the NHL playoffs. The Habs wanted to employ a faster team against the young and quick Tampa squad and therefore Francis Bouillon and Mike Weaver got to play over Murray and Jarred Tinordi. Against a different opponent in round two, Murray's toughness may be needed. Another player who may be called upon to play a bigger role going forward is Travis Moen, who seems to have recovered from a concussion. Once the Canadiens know who they will be playing, a number of lineup decisions will become clear.
