The good news, after being frequently scratched and eventually waived by Boston, is that Backes chipped in three assists in six contests with Anaheim after being traded in February. It's no secret that the 36-year-old is on the tail end of his career, but with a year remaining on his contract, he could make for an interesting cheap value play in DFS formats next season.

Backes has added 33 hits, 33 shots on net and a minus-1 rating in 21 contests between the Bruins and the Ducks. Expect Backes to remain in a fourth-line role with only occasional contributions to the offense.

Backes' assist was his first point in three games with the Ducks, and also his first point since Dec. 5. The 35-year-old forward was acquired from the Bruins as part of the return for Ondrej Kase at the trade deadline. Backes has just four points, 32 shots and 31 hits through 19 appearances this season.

The Bruins dealt Backes, a first-round pick and prospect Axel Andersson to the Ducks in exchange for Ondrej Kase on Friday, Frank Seravalli of TSN.ca reports.

EDGE Analysis

Backes didn't give the Bruins anywhere near what they had hoped to get out of him when they inked the veteran to a five-year deal back in 2016. In order to offload his contract, the B's had to buff the deal with a draft pick and a prospect in exchange for a reasonable return in the form of Kase as Boston makes a run at a championship. Backes may be ticketed for the minors with the Ducks as well, though that hasn't been disclosed at this juncture.

In a statement released by the Bruins on Thursday, GM Don Sweeney relayed that after speaking with Backes, it has been "agreed that it is in the best interest of David and the Bruins for him not to play in Providence at this time."

Sweeney added that Backes, who the team waived earlier in the month, "is fit and able to play, but in order to preserve all potential options for both David and the Bruins moving forward, we have decided this is the best course of action." Prior to the team waiving the 35-year-old for the purposes of sending him to the AHL, Backes had recorded one goal and three points in 16 games for Boston. It remains to be seen if the veteran power forward will play again this season, but if he does, it doesn't appear it will be for the Bruins organization.

Backes has been a shell of his former self this season, collecting just three points while averaging only 8:33 of ice time in the 16 games he's drawn into. He remains under contract for one more season, though it's unlikely his production will spike anytime soon as the veteran's career winds down.
