Severson didn't see a shift in the third period of Monday's 4-0 loss to the Red Wings, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

The former Devil wound up seeing only 11:57 of ice time after topping 21 minutes in each of his first two games of the season. Severson finished the contest with a minus-2 rating, and no points, hits or blocked shots, but he was far from alone in having a bad night. Coach Pascal Vincent is still trying to find a lineup combination that provides a consistent effort, but Severson's benching is likely only temporary given Columbus' other blue line options, especially with Zach Werenski (quadriceps) unavailable.

Picked up from the Devils in the offseason to bolster the Blue Jackets' blue line, Severson is in line for major minutes in Columbus, although he'll be behind the likes of Zach Werenski and Adam Boqvist for power-play time. Neither one was in the lineup Monday however, allowing Severson to flash the skills that led to 11 goals and 46 points in 80 games two seasons ago. Expect the 29-year-old to deliver something more like the seven goals and 33 points in 81 games that he produced in 2022-23 during his first campaign with the Jackets.

Severson agreed Friday with the Devils on an eight-year, $50-million contract and was subsequently traded to the Blue Jackets in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Chris Johnston of TSN reports.

Severson was eligible for free agency next month, but the only way Severson was getting an eighth year on his contract was if the Devils signed him. New Jersey picks up the 80th pick in the draft for a player they evidently weren't going to retain. Severson is the second blueliner in the last three days to be traded to the Blue Jackets after the team acquired Ivan Provorov on Tuesday. Severson had seven goals and 26 assists in 81 regular-season games with New Jersey in 2022-23.

The 28-year-old Severson has been a model for consistency, as he's compiled two goals, eight assists and a plus-6 rating through 13 games this month, and he missed the scoresheet in just four of those contests.

Severson scored a power-play goal on two shots, added an assist and blocked two shots in Sunday's 5-4 overtime win over the Coyotes.

EDGE Analysis

Severson set up a Jesper Boqvist goal late in the first period before scoring one of his own in the second. This was Severson's first multi-point effort since Jan. 13, when he had three assists against the lowly Ducks. The defenseman isn't anywhere near the pace he showed in producing 46 points over 80 contests a year ago -- he has five tallies, 16 helpers, 79 shots on net, 85 blocks and a plus-6 rating through 61 outings in 2022-23.

Severson has seen his offense slip back after starting January well -- he has just a goal and an assist over his last seven games. The 28-year-old defenseman is up to 15 points, 59 shots on net, 69 blocked shots, 30 PIM and a plus-2 rating through 48 outings this season. He's still in a top-four role, so he may have some fantasy value in deeper formats.

Severson scored a goal on three shots and blocked six shots in Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Kraken.

Severson got the Devils on the board at 11:32 of the second period. The 28-year-old defenseman has been much better on offense lately with two goals, six assists and a plus-6 rating over his last eight appearances. For the season, he's at 14 points, 52 shots on net, 58 blocked shots and a plus-6 rating through 44 contests while maintaining a top-four role and some time on the second power-play unit.
