Hellebuyck allowed three first period goals and the Jets never quite recovered. The netminder has allowed four goals in back-to-back contests and has allowed four-plus goals in four of his last six outings. The 28-year-old has been a consistent starter though, missing just two of his team's last 25 games.

Hellebuyck will get the starting nod for Thursday's game in Nashville, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.

The Jets stormed out to a 2-0 lead before three minutes were gone in the first period, but the game mostly belonged to the Capitals after that, and Hellebuyck nearly got stuck with his second regulation loss in his last three starts until Pierre-Luc Dubois scored with 65 seconds left in the third to send the game to OT. Hellebuyck is still mired in a rough stretch by his standards, although Winnipeg's offense has bailed him out more often that not -- over his last 12 appearances, he's gone 7-4-1 despite a 3.02 GAA.

Hellebuyck will guard the cage Tuesday against the visiting Capitals.

Hellebuyck has posted an excellent 7-4-0 record with a 2.93 GAA and a .914 save percentage over his last 11 appearances. He last squared off with the Capitals in Winnipeg on Dec. 17, stopping 34 of 37 shots in a 5-2 loss. Washington has gone 4-4-2 since their last meeting with Winnipeg, averaging 32.5 shots on goal over that time.

Hellebuyck made 33 saves in a 3-0 win over Detroit on Thursday.

Helly was dialled in Thursday -- the puck seemed like it was as big as a beach ball to the twinetender. Hellebuyck has had an up and down season, but he looks as though his game has really sharpened. He's 4-1-0 in his last five starts, with seven goals allowed in those four victories. We're throwing away the seven goals Hellebuyck allowed to Colorado a week ago -- that offense is elite. He's a great trade target, especially if you can get him at slightly under market. But that window may be almost closed.

Hellebuyck will defend the cage against the Red Wings on the road Thursday, Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

EDGE Analysis

Hellebuyck has appeared in 20 of the team's previous 22 contests and will be making his seventh consecutive start for the club. Even before Eric Comrie was placed in the COVID-19 protocols, the 28-year-old Hellebuyck figured to play in the majority of the games for the Jets and will likely challenge for the top of the games played list among netminders.

Hellebuyck stopped 35 shots in Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Avalanche.

Winnipeg actually got on the board first thanks to a Mark Schiefele power-play tally early in the first period, but Hellebuyck got very little help the rest of the way. It's the third time in his last six starts he's given up four goals or more, and on the season he carries a 2.83 GAA and .913 save percentage.

The American netminder is up to 13-9-4 with a 2.67 GAA and a .917 save percentage through 26 appearances. A tougher challenge awaits Thursday when the Jets are scheduled to visit the Avalanche.

Hellebuyck is expected to guard the cage for Tuesday's road matchup with Arizona, Mitchell Clinton of the Jets' official site reports.
