It's likely the Devils will opt to retain the restricted free agent after acquiring him at the trade deadline. Carrick has shown flashes of ability, but he hasn't been able to put it all together, recording no more than 12 points in a season while already dressing for four different NHL teams.

He'd gone without a point in seven straight games coming into Monday, while the goal was only his second of the season -- with the other coming in mid-October. Carrick is a solid hand in his own zone, but the 24-year-old simply doesn't offer much fantasy upside.

Carrick has etched his name on the scoresheet in both games the Devils have played in Alberta, but he has also taken a minus-5 rating in those two games. The defender did block three shots Wednesday, bringing his season total to 25. It's unlikely for most fantasy owners to have a need for Carrick's services.

Carrick picked up an assist but also went minus-4 in a 9-4 loss to the Flames on Tuesday.

It wasn't a pretty game for most of the Devils' roster, and Carrick was no exception. He did pick up his first point since he had two assists in his first game with the team on Feb. 25. Carrick now has a goal and six helpers in 22 games between the Stars and Devils this year.

The 24-year-old wasted no time in endearing himself to Devils fans in his first game since the trade from the Stars. Remarkably, Carrick is already on his fourth organization in five NHL seasons, but he might finally get a chance to establish himself as a regular member of a blue line corps on a New Jersey squad already looking ahead to 2019-20.

The Stars dealt Carrick and a 2019 third-round draft pick to the Devils for Ben Lovejoy on Saturday, Mark Stepneski of the Stars' official site reports.

Both players involved in this deal are defensemen, but unlike Lovejoy, he'll be under club control as a restricted free agent this summer. Carrick's totals this season consist of one goal and three helpers over 14 games -- there's not much fantasy value here, but Carrick is moving onto his third team in two years and really would stand to benefit from more continuity with a given team.

Carrick was recalled from AHL Texas after a conditioning assignment, Mark Stepneski of the Stars' official site reports.

Carrick was sent down for conditioning on Jan. 20 to get some extra reps during the All-Star break. The Illinois native suited up for just four NHL games since Dec. 31, watching several games from the press box as a healthy scratch in the process. He'll likely continue on a similar trend in the second half of the season.

Carrick has been a healthy scratch in six of the last nine games, and he's averaging just 7:57 TOI when he's in the lineup. He'll look to get back into hockey shape and hopefully return for Wednesday's game versus the Sabres, but he may have to wait until after the All-Star break.
