Tanev is working through his visa issues, raising doubts regarding his availability versus San Jose on Saturday, Stars radio analyst Bruce LeVine reports.

According to general manager Jim Nill, Tanev should be available and ready to play against the Sharks on Tuesday at the latest, though the situation remains fluid. During his time in Calgary this season, the veteran blueliner generated one goal on 43 shots and 13 assists while averaging 19:50 of ice time through 56 contests. Once available to play, Tanev figures to bump either Joel Hanley or Jani Hakanpaa from the lineup.

Tanev was traded from the Flames to the Stars via the Devils on Wednesday in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick, a conditional 2026 third-round pick and Artyom Grushnikov, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports.

Tanev's role will not change much from switching teams -- he's a top-four defenseman who's sound in his own zone. Tanev is second in the NHL with 171 blocked shots, but he also has just 14 points through 56 outings, so his fantasy value remains limited to deeper formats. Per Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News, Tanev won't play Thursday versus the Jets, but he could be available by Saturday's game versus the Sharks.

Tanev set up Blake Coleman's tally in the second period before grabbing a second assist on Mikael Backlund's empty-netter in the third. It's just the second multi-point game of the season for Tanev, who'd gone scoreless in four games since he recorded a pair of helpers Feb. 15 against San Jose. While Tanev won't contribute much offensively, he's been a solid defensive presence on Calgary's top pairing. He's up to 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) with 171 blocked shots and a plus-16 rating through 56 games this year.

The 34-year-old is at 12 points, 40 shots on net, 153 blocked shots and a plus-11 rating through 51 outings overall, putting him one point shy of matching his total from 2022-23.

The helper was his third point in the last 10 games, and he also took a couple of knocks that briefly sent him to the locker room but couldn't keep him off the ice. The 34-year-old is up to 11 points, a plus-11 rating, 146 blocked shots and 38 shots on net through 49 outings overall. Tanev's value is higher on the ice than in fantasy, but he'll command a top-four role with virtually any team in the league for his defensive prowess.

EDGE Analysis

Tanev snapped a 14-game point drought with the helper. The 34-year-old also posted his second-highest total of blocks in a game this season, trailing only the 10 blocks he recorded Dec. 18 versus the Panthers. He's up to eight points and 118 blocks through 39 appearances this season, ranking third in the league in the latter category behind only Jacob Trouba (124) and Mario Ferraro (121).

Tanev blocked 10 shots and went plus-3 in Monday's 3-1 win over the Panthers.

The 10 blocks were a career high for Tanev, who is established as one of the top shot-blockers in the NHL. More impressively, he did that in his first game back after missing three with an upper-body injury. The 33-year-old has seven points, 75 blocks, 26 shots on net and a plus-4 rating over 29 appearances this season. In his career, he's racked up 1,520 blocked shots over 746 contests, ranking 34th in league history since the stat was tracked beginning in 2005-06.

Tanev (upper body) will be back in the lineup Monday versus the Panthers, according to Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun.
