If Matt Murray can stay healthy -- something he has struggled with -- the second man in Pittsburgh will likely top out around 25 games played.

This was the rookie's first start since March 21, and for fantasy owners who took the risk of starting him in this favorable spot against Ottawa, he more than delivered. He projects to backup No. 1 Matt Murray during the playoffs, and DeSmith could also have the inside track of opening the 2018-19 season in the same role.

DeSmith will be the home goalie against the Senators in the Penguins' final regular season game Friday, Sam Werner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

EDGE Analysis

DeSmith rode the pine in Pittsburgh's last seven games, so it's been a little while since he's gotten a chance to start. The 26-year-old has a 2.63 GAA and .913 save percentage in limited action. Ottawa has scored 2.71 goals per game, so DeSmith may be able to end the season with a nice outing, and also shake off any rust in case the Penguins need him in the playoffs.

With Matt Murray now recovered from his concussion, DeSmith's opportunities for playing time down the stretch could be limited, but his .919 save percentage in 11 games since making his first NHL start in mid-January should give the Pens' some confidence in the rookie if they need him.

This has opened the door for DeSmith to face a Habs team that owns an egregious minus-50 goal differential with just two wins in its last 10 games. He'll be a sneaky daily fantasty play Wednesday evening.

DeSmith stopped 29 shots in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Rangers.

EDGE Analysis

He made some big saves, but this was still the most goals the rookie has allowed in any of his 12 games this season, leaving him with a respectable .914 save percentage. Tristan Jarry has been seeing the bulk of the work in net for the Pens lately, and this outing likely isn't going to tip things back DeSmith's way.

DeSmith didn't see much action in his last start Sunday against Dallas, but he was sharp nonetheless, turning aside 17 of the 18 shots he faced en route to a 3-1 victory. The 26-year-old netminder will look to stay dialed in and pick up his fifth win of the season in a road matchup with a Rangers club that's 19-13-4 at home this campaign.

DeSmith stopped 17 of 18 shots in Sunday's victory over Dallas.

It was the 11th appearance of the season for DeSmith, who advances to 4-4-0 with a .919 save percentage. The 26-year-old has been splitting time with Tristan Jarry in the absence of Matt Murray (concussion). DeSmith has looked solid of late, so the rookie could be worth scooping up while Murray is on the shelf.

DeSmith will tend the twine for Sunday's showdown against the Stars.

DeSmith will make his first start since getting blown up for three goals on just five shots against Boston on Mar. 1. Aside from that blemish, the 26-year-old rookie has been a solid backup option for the Penguins, splitting time between the NHL and AHL levels. For now though, DeSmith isn't a great fantasy play.

DeSmith stopped all nine shots during the third period in relief of Tristan Jarry on Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Maple Leafs.

EDGE Analysis

He didn't receive much work, but DeSmith was certainly better than he was in his last appearance nine days ago when he stopped just 2 of 5 shots in six minutes against the Bruins. Perhaps getting the rookie's feet wet in a non-pressure situation like this is just what DeSmith needed. But in all likelihood, the 27-year-old rookie is not the answer most owners are searching for this month.
