The Pens' blue-line corps has been atrocious through their first two games of the season, hanging Jarry out to dry and not giving DeSmith much help either after he entered this one. It's not clear which netminder will be in the crease Sunday against the Capitals, but the defense will need to play better to give either one a fighting chance against Alex Ovechkin and company.

DeSmith, who was expected to be promoted from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, will remain in the minors after losing his passport.

The Penguins are traveling to Montreal, so DeSmith couldn't come on the trip without his passport. The team recalled Emil Larmi from ECHL Wheeling instead to back up Matt Murray so Tristan Jarry didn't have to travel. DeSmith still hasn't made his season debut at the top level this year, and he's posted a .909 save percentage and 10-8-2 record in the AHL ranks.

DeSmith will be promoted from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in order to serve as the backup against Montreal on Saturday.

Before Penguins fans jump to conclusions, DeSmith's promotion is only occuring to avoid having Tristan Jarry travel ahead of Sunday's matchup with Florida, rather than the result of an injury. The 28-year-old DeSmith will link up with the team in Montreal, slot in as the backup behind Matt Murray and then return to the minors. With the Baby Pens, the New Hampshire native is 10-8-2 with a 2.82 GAA and .909 save percentage.

DeSmith was designated for waivers by the Penguins on Monday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

EDGE Analysis

DeSmith may have been the preferred option behind Matt Murray, but he makes nearly double that of Tristan Jarry and the Penguins are hurting for cap space. If the club can make a salary dump at some point down the road, the 28-year-old DeSmith would likely find himself back in Pittsburgh, assuming he clears waivers ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

DeSmith will start and play the entire game Saturday against Columbus.

The fact that Taylor is expected to go the distance Saturday will make him a popular play in daily contests. The 28-year-old netminder was rock solid in his preseason debut Monday against Buffalo, turning aside 23 of 25 shots. He's' firmly entrenched as the Penguins' backup netminder heading into the 2019-20 campaign.

DeSmith is dialed in right now -- he was coming off a shutout of the Sabres on Thursday -- and while Murray's recent play has been mostly sharp as well, the Penguins should be confident they can give their backup a little more work down the stretch if they want to try and get Murray some extra rest before the playoffs.

DeSmith hadn't played since Feb. 21, but he could find himself back in net over the weekend, as Pittsburgh gets set to play a back-to-back with games Saturday and Sunday.

DeSmith will be between the pipes against the Sabres on the road Thursday.

DeSmith will be making his first appearance in goal since Feb. 21 versus San Jose. Coach Mike Sullivan went with starter Matt Murray in nine straight, including a pair of back-to-backs, but will finally give the No. 1 a night off. With the Penguins' playoff spot far from clinched, DeSmith could find himself watching more often than not down the stretch.

DeSmith stopped 29 of 33 shots in Thursday's 4-0 loss to the Sharks.

EDGE Analysis

All four goals against DeSmith came on special teams -- three with the Sharks on the power play and one with San Jose shorthanded. San Jose put this one away early with a trio of first-period goals, and Pittsburgh's offense never showed up to bail DeSmith out.
