However, given his limited experience and lack of a significantly productive track record, he likely projects as a fourth or fifth line forward if does get signed longterm.

While we can't confidently suggest Gibbons will produce like this if he's still on Broadway come opening night, the performance certainly doesn't hurt his chances of making the roster.

Gibbons signed a one-year contract with the Rangers on Wednesday. Gibbons split his season roughly evenly between AHL Springfield and the Blue Jackets in 2014-15, playing in 26 games at the former and 25 at the latter. He likely wouldn't have seen as much frequent action with the Blue Jackets had the team not dealt with an array of injuries, so it could be tougher to him to break through the deep Rangers forward ranks.
