He should continue to play in a top-four role.

While he had an abbreviated training camp in order to deal with a personal matter, Chiarot didn't take long to settle back into the mix as a second-pairing defenseman. He's not a coveted fantasy option, though he'll almost assuredly get his fair share of hits and blocked shots this campaign.

Coach Derek Lalonde is hopeful that Chiarot can play as early as Tuesday's preseason contest versus the Blackhawks. Chiarot, who is likely a occupy a second-pairing role this season, had five goals and 19 points in 76 games during the 2022-23 campaign.

It remains to be seen exactly where Chiarot will fit in the lineup since the Red Wings acquired Jeff Petry, Shayne Gostisbehere and Justin Holl in the offseason. It's clear that GM Steve Yzerman finds Chiarot valuable; after all, the versatile defenseman is on the books for three more seasons at $4.75 million AAV and has a modified no-trade clause built into the contract.

Chiarot (undisclosed) will be back in the lineup against Carolina on Thursday, Daniella Bruce of the Red Wings' official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

In addition to Chiarot, the Wings are expected to put Simon Edvinsson back onto the blue line Thursday, which likely means both Robert Hagg and Gustav Lindstrom will serve as healthy scratches.
