Matthews has just three assists and a minus-11 rating in his last seven games.
EDGE Analysis
He has also scored just one goal in his last 13 games (dating back to Dec. 22). Coach Mike Babcock continues to shuffle lines in practice and in games to try to spark his young superstar, but to no effect so far. Monday, Babs put Matthews with Mitch Marner at practice, but there's no guarantee that will stick past the end of practice. Matthews will get things going soon and could explode offensively at any given time. Keep putting him out there.

Matthews scored a goal and added an assist in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Bruins.
EDGE Analysis
Matthews has hit the score sheet in every match since his return -- that's five games and 10 points, including six goals. He has 26 points in just 16 games this season and continues to show that he's perhaps the best sniping center in the NHL.

Matthews tallied a power-play goal Saturday in a 5-3 win over Minnesota.
EDGE Analysis
Matthews is a beast -- there's no other description that's good enough. He's played two games since his return from energy and he has three goals, including two on the power play, and added an assist. The remarkable part? Matthews has the same number of goals (13) as games played and while we don't expect him to keep that pace, we know you can't count against a generational talent like him.

Matthews picked up three points in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Sharks.
EDGE Analysis
Toronto's offense was doing fine without No. 34 but with him back and playing at a high level, there's no telling how far the Maples Leafs will go in 2018-19. Matthews now has 12 goals and 19 points this season. The American-born Maple Leaf has only played 12 games this year after a shoulder injury suffered back on Oct. 27 forced him to the press box. He's back, and Toronto's offense was firing on all cylinders Wednesday night. Meanwhile, the Buds are still without William Nylander (contract dispute) who has until Saturday to sign a new contract or be forced to sit out the entire season.

Matthews (shoulder) has been taken of injured reserve ahead of Wednesday's matchup with San Jose, per the NHL media site.
EDGE Analysis
In the last step in the process, the Leafs activated Matthews in order to reinsert him into the lineup versus the Sharks. After 14 games on the sidelines, the all-star center will get his chance to end a five-game goalless streak that extends back to Oct. 13.

Matthews (shoulder) will be in action versus the Sharks on Wednesday, Terry Koshan of The Toronto Sun reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matthews return to the lineup ends a 14-game absence due to his shoulder problem. The center figures to slot into the second line alongside Kasperi Kapanen and Patrick Marleau, while Frederik Gauthier will be relegated to a spot in the press box. The 21-year-old Matthews was bogged down in a five-game goal drought prior to getting hurt, but should still be on pace for another 60-plus point campaign. Prior to puck drop, Matthews will need to be activated off injured reserve; however, no additional roster move will be needed since the Leafs are below the 23-man limit.

Matthews (shoulder) told reporters he feels good enough to play versus San Jose on Wednesday, but still needs to be cleared by the medical staff, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matthews ditched the non-contact sweater for Tuesday's practice session, per Kristen Shilton of TSN.ca, which is certainly a step in the right direction. In order to dress Wednesday, the world-class center will need to be activated off injured reserve. If he does play, it will mark the end of a 14-game stint on the sidelines for Matthews.

Matthews (shoulder) did not take part in line rushes at practice Monday, Mark Masters of TSN.ca reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matthews -- who was previously ruled out against the Bruins on Monday -- will need to fully participate in practice before he can rejoin the lineup. In addition, the Leafs will need to activate the all-star center off injured reserve as the last step in the recovery process. Once healthy, Matthews should rejoin Patrick Marleau and Kasperi Kapanen on the second line.

Matthews (shoulder) is feeling better but will miss at least three more games, Mark Masters of TSN.ca reports.
EDGE Analysis
The center suffered a shoulder injury back on Oct. 27 and has missed 11 games as a result. Fast forward approximately one month, and Matthews is once again skating with his teammates and appears to be a week or so away from getting the green light for game action. Assuming he sits for three, No. 34 could return to Toronto's lineup as soon as next Wednesday against San Jose. Expect the Maple Leafs to remove Matthews from IR in the not-so-distant future.

Matthews (shoulder) skated with his team Thursday, Paul Hendrick of the Maple Leafs' official site reports. This marks the first time he's done so since sustaining the injury in an Oct. 27 contest against the Jets.
EDGE Analysis
This is a sure sign of progress for Matthews, though he still isn't expected to return until late November if the initial recovery timeline holds up. The Buds have won four of the last seven games without the 2016 first overall pick, as John Tavares has amassed nine points over that span.
