The St. Louis Blues head into Detroit tonight with an 8-0-1 record in January and defenseman Alex Pietrangelo has been a major reason.
Two more assists Saturday in a 4-2 victory over Buffalo pushed his career-high point streak to nine games, the longest by an NHL defenseman this season. It's the second-longest by a Blues defenseman in franchise history. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Jeff Brown had scoring streaks of nine and 10 games in 1992-93. "He's just emerging right in front of everybody's eyes as hopefully a No. 1 defenseman," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Those are hard to find." Is Pietrangelo a little ahead of schedule at age 22? "Not so much defensively ... I'm a little surprised offensively," Hitchcock said. "I had him in the (World Championships) six months ago and I didn't see the offensive player that he is now. That's just growing. He's got more maturity in his game, he's not as jumpy offensively and I'm impressed with that."

Alex Pietrangelo has notched at least one point in seven straight games.
The St. Louis blueliner has generated two goals and eight helpers over that span to give him 21 points on the season. He has been a shooting machine of late, with a whopping 31 shots in seven games this month. "I really just have to trust my shot," he said. "I think earlier I was looking to pass too much. I found myself second-guessing my shot. I have to trust my ability to shoot the puck, I've had that threat my whole career." Pietrangelo had a unproductive start to the year, but his recent turnaround could be the beginning of a much better second half.

Alex Pietrangelo had two assists on Saturday, giving the defenseman six points in his last three games.
Pietrangelo was drafted fourth overall in 2009 for his outstanding offensive skills and he is starting to show why the Blues drafted him that high as he has a goal and five assists in their last three contests. He now has six goals and 17 points in 40 games, along with a plus-13 rating and at age 21, his future looks extremely bright. Look for Pietrangelo to really come into his own in the next couple of seasons and become a top-notch fantasy producer.
