That could be a way to get him or another of the Islanders' extra defensemen into the lineup more regularly down the stretch. Still, Boqvist's place in the lineup isn't safe, especially with another power-play specialist in Scott Perunovich, as well as Scott Mayfield and Mike Reilly, waiting in the press box. Boqvist is at 10 points (five on the power play), 36 shots on net, 15 blocked shots and a minus-6 rating over 28 appearances this season.

This ended a six-game point drought for Boqvist, who scored in his Islanders debut Feb. 1 but hadn't gotten back on the scoresheet since. The 24-year-old has nine points, 35 shots on net, 14 blocked shots and a minus-4 rating over 26 appearances between the Islanders and the Panthers this season. With the blue line much healthier than it was a month ago, Boqvist will be in competition with Scott Mayfield and Scott Perunovich for playing time.

Boqvist was playing his first game for the Islanders after being claimed off waivers Friday. He took a pass off the boards for a breakaway. His first shot was stopped, but he punched in the rebound to tie the game 1-1 late in the second period. Boqvist, who was drafted eighth overall in 2018, has bounced around four teams over the last six seasons. The Isles have given the offensively-oriented defender a fresh start, although it's hard to know how he'll be deployed once Noah Dobson (lower body) returns and Tony DeAngelo slides down and becomes the secondary offensive contributor.

Boqvist was claimed off waivers by the Islanders from Florida on Friday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
