An agent "repping one of the better backs in the draft" tells Packer Report that he's under the impression Green Bay is "closing in" on a deal with free agent Steven Jackson. The agent apparently doesn't rep S-Jax. Throughout Wednesday, several signs pointed to Jackson picking the Packers over the Falcons. The latter team does not appear to be seriously bidding, perhaps taken out of the mix by Tony Gonzalez's return. Gonzo will cost at least $7 million, taking a bite out of Atlanta's cap.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette "hears" the Packers are working on a three-year deal with free agent Steven Jackson. It looks like the biggest holdup right now in this deal is money. The cap-conscious Packers have a number they're hesitant to budge from and Jackson's camp is trying to create some leverage. Nothing appears imminent right now, but at the two sides are talking.

A source tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that the Packers do not appear close to signing free agent Steven Jackson. The Packers are annually one of the league's most cap-savvy teams. GM Ted Thompson will not help Jackson leverage his price-tag by getting into a bidding war with the Falcons. They have a number they're willing to pay Jackson and will likely stick to it. Jackson got that message when the Packers brought in Peyton Hillis for a visit Tuesday afternoon.

Citing a source who spoke to the Rams, Bill Huber of Packer Report reports that free agent Steven Jackson will "likely" sign with Green Bay. Recently, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the Packers, Falcons, and Broncos were all showing strong interest in Jackson. Green Bay has the most salary cap space of that group, and Packers GM Ted Thompson is a longtime admirer of S-Jax. We'd anticipate a deal worth something like $12 million across three seasons. Jackson is going on age 30, but has juice left in the tank.

Profootballtalk reports the Packers are the "leaders" for free agent Steven Jackson. Normally, GM Ted Thompson doesn't shell out the cash for players on the wrong side of 30, but Jackson has expressed a desire to play with Aaron Rodgers and could be the missing piece to the offense. Jackson is certainly aiming to latch on with a contending team that has a murky running back situation.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Falcons are "still regarded as the frontrunner" to sign free agent Steven Jackson. Jackson reportedly didn't receive many phone calls as the negotiating period opened Saturday at midnight, but Atlanta "isn't the only team interested." The other clubs are unknown. Jackson has resigned himself to leaving St. Louis. "I understand the business side of it," he said. "I still have a great relationship with the (Rams') organization, and one day I'll be going back there."

Free agent Steven Jackson told ESPN Friday that he'd like to finish his career "like Ray Lewis." Jackson will obviously be targeting contenders for his next team. We don't see him back in St. Louis. S-Jax made it clear that the Rams wanted him back only as a "committee" back, sharing time with Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead. The Broncos, Packers, and Falcons would all be logical landing spots.

Free agent Steven Jackson says his disagreement with the Rams isn't about money, but it has more to do with his role moving forward. "I embrace the fact that I took in Daryl [Richardson] and Isaiah Pead and taught them a lot and hopefully they'll go on to not only excel, but be very good athletes and good professionals in this league," said Jackson. "But for where I'm at going into year 10, I'm not ready to step back and just become a primary backup or reduced role guy, to be a part of a running back by committee." Jackson officially voided his player option on Thursday, and it appears he'll be seeking a team that will let him be the "bell cow" while chasing a Lombardi trophy.

Steven Jackson has officially voided the final year of his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. Jackson made his mind up about this weeks ago, but now the paperwork is in. He's giving up $7 million in 2013 so that he can test the market and land a long-term deal. A reunion with the Rams is possible, but true contenders such as the Packers and Falcons could also show interest. After averaging 4.23 yards per carry behind a woeful offensive line over the last two seasons, S-Jax is clearly the No. 1 running back available in free agency.
