Roy Williams (groin) was held out of Wednesday's Bears practice. The Chicago Tribune characterized Williams' Week 2 status as "unclear," and this doesn't exactly clear it up. Johnny Knox should be rostered in most leagues.

The Chicago Tribune considers Roy Williams' Week 2 status "unclear" due to a groin injury. Williams left last weekend's drubbing of the Falcons in the fourth quarter and didn't return. The injury happened late and the game was a blowout, so Williams' absence could have just as easily been precautionary. We'll know more when the Bears practice this week. Johnny Knox is next up on the depth chart.

Roy Williams managed to hold off Johnny Knox for the Week 1 starting job opposite Devin Hester. Rather than continuing to tilt at windmills while Mike Martz plays favorite, we'll simply suggest that the situation is fluid. Knox outplayed Williams in preseason and training camp because he's the better player. By season's end, we expect Knox and Earl Bennett to be the two most productive receivers on the roster. Until the depth chart changes, though, the Chicago receivers are fantasy torture.

Roy Williams is "not one of the Bears' top three receivers" right now, according to the Chicago Tribune's Dan Pompei. Pompei believes the coaching staff's expectations were unrealistic, as he's more of a role player and red-zone weapon. Pompei isn't writing Williams off completely, but he believes there's a good chance Johnny Knox will end up regaining the starting job that was handed to Williams on a silver platter entering camp.

Bears WRs coach Darryl Drake made it clear Wednesday that Roy Williams' starting job is in danger based on his conditioning and performance. "He understands that Johnny (Knox) is there, and Johnny is hungry, and Johnny wants his spot back," said Drake. "If things don't start changing, then Johnny is going to be in there. Heard it straight from the horse's mouth." Drake confirmed Williams is out of shape, and says "Johnny has improved tremendously" in camp. "If Johnny Knox is that guy, then he needs to be out there."

Roy Williams had no catches in Monday's preseason game despite playing the majority of the first half. Williams dropped two of the three passes that came his way and looked like he was going through the motions. While we're not going to rush to judgment off a glorified scrimmage, this version of Williams is one that we saw all too often in Dallas. He's far from a sure thing to hold off Johnny Knox for the "X" receiver job all season.

Jay Cutler concedes that Roy Williams is "getting back into shape" in training camp. Williams went into damage control mode Thursday, insisting his out of shape comment on the radio was simply sarcasm gone wrong. Williams has had trouble beating the jam, hanging onto passes, and developing chemistry with Jay Cutler. Meanwhile, Johnny Knox "continues to look explosive" and is "balling," according to beat writer Sean Jensen. This battle is far from over.

Roy Williams admitted Wednesday that he's not yet in game shape after two weeks of Bears camp. There's no excuse for this. Williams has been observed practicing "at less than peak speed," and Roy E. conceded "my conditioning" has held him back. "Getting my wind right. You have to be able to run in this offense." Williams began practicing with the Bears on August 4, so he must have been really out of shape before that. Said quarterback Jay Cutler, "hopefully by Monday('s preseason game), he'll be ready to go." Hopefully.

Bears WRs coach Darryl Drake says recent signee Roy Williams is not "going to be handed anything." Drake's comments come in contrast to those made by OC Mike Martz last week, who praised Williams as an "elite player" capable of hauling in 70-to-80 receptions. Williams should be in for an uptick in production, but the Bears aren't going to abandon Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett to lock on to a 30-year-old wideout who's averaged barely 36 catches the past three seasons.
