Smith will serve as the Cowboys' No. 2 running back behind Alfred Morris during Ezekiel Elliott's suspension, Jane Slater of NFL Network reports.

Smith has been active for all seven games this season in order to uphold the special-teams ranks. The development has ensured Darren McFadden remain a regular inactive, but in the wake of a district judge reinstating Elliott's ban earlier this week, the Cowboys will keep their other three running backs active moving forward. While Morris will likely receive most of the first- and second-down work, Smith could handle a change-of-pace role after recording 10 carries for 69 yards and two receptions (on three targets) for 23 yards so far in 2017.

Smith could be in line for an increased workload beginning in Week 9 now that Ezekiel Elliott's court battle to overturn or delay his six-game suspension has failed.

EDGE Analysis

Dallas does have two veteran options available in Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden to replace Elliott, but McFadden has been inactive all season so far and Smith has shown some intriguing flashes in his limited carries, racking up a 6.9 YPC. His upside would be fairly significant running behind the Cowboys' all-world offensive line if he were able to secure a meaningful role, but how the team divides touches between Morris, McFadden and Smith has yet to be determined, making each RB a very volatile fantasy asset until the situation becomes clearer.

Smith carried the ball eight times for 61 yards while catching one of two targets for five yards in Sunday's 40-10 rout of the 49ers.

EDGE Analysis

Ezekiel Elliott dominated the backfield touches in the win, but surprisingly it was Smith, and not Alfred Morris, who shone in a backup role. Should Elliott eventually be forced to serve his suspension this season, it could well be Smith, and not bigger-name options Morris or Darren McFadden, who emerges as the most useful fantasy RB behind Dallas' outstanding offensive line.

Smith nabbed an 18-yard pass during Sunday's 35-31 loss to Green Bay.

EDGE Analysis

Smith's reception came at the opening of the second quarter and helped set up a Dak Prescott touchdown run. Dallas has become synonymous with a pounding style and strong blocking, but don't let that fool you into thinking that the fullback is being prominently featured. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was a one-back offense guru back when many teams were still prominently featuring the fullback. Smith was on the field for just three of 74 offensive snaps on Sunday.

Smith carried the ball seven times for 53 yards and caught three of four targets for 27 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Colts.

EDGE Analysis

Even with Ezekiel Elliott suspended, Smith will have a hard time seeing touches in the Dallas backfield working behind proven vets Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris. Nonetheless, the versatile Smith continues to put together an impressive preseason, and he could surprise once the games start counting if he gets an opportunity.

Smith has been working ahead of Alfred Morris as the No. 3 running back dating back to minicamp, ESPN.com's Todd Archer reports.

EDGE Analysis

This adds further credence to the notion Morris could be traded or released, but it doesn't mean Smith will be the one replacing the 28-year-old in the No. 3 role, as Jahad Thomas (hamstring) and recent addition Ronnie Hillman are also in the mix. Capable of playing both halfback and fullback, Smith likely will need to prove his worth on special teams in order to earn a roster spot.

Smith converted to a fullback role ahead of the 2016 campaign but never made it through the entire season in Dallas. He appears set to square off with Keith Smith for what will likely be one roster spot in the offseason.

The team also drafted Smith's younger brother, Jaylen, in the second round, so he certainly has plenty of incentive to stick with the club even beyond the usual factors.
