EDGE Analysis

Dial (knee) will not play in Thursday's preseason finale against San Diego, but head coach Chip Kelly expects him to be ready by Week 1, CSN Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
Dial went down with a knee injury in last week's preseason loss to Green Bay. He went for an MRI but the team has inexplicably kept the results of the test under wraps. If Kelly is correct and Dial is able to suit up against the Rams on Sept. 12 then he will serve as one of the team's three starting defensive linemen.

The 49ers have signed Dial to a three-year extension, The Sacramento Bee reports.
EDGE Analysis
Dial - who would have been a free agent after the 2016 season - set career-highs in tackles (59 combined) and sacks (2.5) this past year. He showed enough improvement for the 49ers' front office to extend his contract through the 2019 season. A former fifth-round draft pick in 2013, Dial has outworked higher draft picks from that class - such as Tank Carradine and Corey Lemonier - to earn a starting spot next year.

Dial is expected to start at defensive end opposite Glenn Dorsey to start the season, CSN Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
Dial has been lining up with the first unit during training camp and preseason, so it should come as no surprise that he will start the season in that role. With the release of Darnell Dockett - who was only expected to play on pass-rush downs - it further cements Dial's role as the starting right defensive end. His versatility should keep him on the field for all four downs. From a fantasy perspective, Dial could be useful in deeper IDP leagues for a low-end combination of tackles and sacks.
