IDP Sleepers - Week 13 fantasysharks.com Fri 11/29/13 5:00 AM

For most fantasy leagues, this is the final week before the playoffs begin. Teams are scratching and clawing for every advantage to get to the big dance. With three games taking place on Thanksgiving and this article not being published until the Friday after Thanksgiving, the talent pool was definitely compromised. That's why I love my job so much, as finding these sleeper candidates was by no means easy, but it was a ton of fun! Without further ado ... LINEBACKERS Pat Angerer, ILB, Indianapolis vs. Tennessee: Angerer struggled mightily in coverage last week against Arizona and played the lowest amount of snaps he's registered in the past five games (36). Look for a bounceback week against a Titans team that he racked up nine tackles (eight solo) against two weeks ago. Tennessee will look to establish running back Chris Johnson on the ground, leading to more playing time and production for Angerer. Brandon Spikes, MLB, New England at Houston: Spikes totaled nine tackles last week and also recovered a fumble in the comeback victory over Denver. This week he has a prime matchup to reach double-digit tackles. Jacksonville middle linebacker Paul Posluszny racked up 15 total stops last week against Houston. Where does Spikes line up? In the middle, baby, and he belongs in starting lineups this week. David Hawthorne, ILB, New Orleans at Seattle: The Seahawks have not been an ideal matchup for allowing points to linebackers but have given up the occasional big week. Atlanta's Paul Worrilow went off for 19 tackles against them in Week 10 and Tampa Bay's Lavonte David also reached double-digit stops in Week 9. The weather is shaping up to be nasty on Monday night and that could mean a lot of handing the ball off to Marshawn Lynch. Hawthorne has put up 14 tackles in his last two games and 61 for the season. He also brings big play potential and has three sacks and a forced fumble through 11 games. Darryl Sharpton, ILB, Houston vs. New England: Sharpton has 25 total tackles over the past three weeks, with 17 of those being solos. In each of their past two games the New England Patriots have seen a pair of opposing linebackers reach double-digit stops against them (Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis in Week 11 /Danny Trevathan and Wesley Woodyard in Week 12). Sharpton is an excellent start this week on a defense that will be on the field a lot. Aldon Smith, OLB, San Francisco vs. St. Louis: Smith did not play in the Week 4 matchup between the teams and the ...

IDP BARGAIN BIN: Last-Minute Lottery Ticket Linebackers fantasysharks.com Wed 8/28/13 9:06 AM

The 2013 NFL preseason is just about in the books, and before you know it the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos will be kicking off another season of exciting NFL action. That Thursday night game will also set another fantasy football campaign in motion, and in advance of that game one last big weekend of IDP drafts remain. Whether you're preparing for the last of your drafts or trying to smooth the rough edges off your team before the season begins, nearly every IDP owner has one thing in common. We all need more linebackers. They're the running backs of IDP. There's no such thing as too many. So, with the first week of the season just around the corner, here's a look at a handful of "lottery ticket" linebackers. These players may not finish the 2013 season in the top 10, but it wouldn't be at all surprising if they become dependable weekly starters for your IDP squad in leagues where you start three or more. That's not a bad deal at all, given that they are available either very late in drafts or on your league's waiver wire. Pat Angerer, Indianapolis Colts It wasn't that long ago (last year) that Indianapolis Colts inside linebacker Pat Angerer was viewed as a rock-solid IDP LB2 coming off a season in which he tallied over 140 tackles. Then Angerer broke his foot in the preseason and wasn't right for most of the year. By the time Angerer was anywhere near healthy he had lost his starting spot to Kavell Conner , and Angerer finished the 2012 campaign as a subpackage linebacker with minimal IDP value. However, for the first time in a long time Angerer was back in the starting lineup in Indy's third exhibition game, and head coach Chuck Pagano told Kevin Bowen of the team's website that the fourth-year veteran "added a spark" to the defense. Whether this was a one-shot deal or a sign of things to come remains to be seen, but Angerer finished the game tied for second on the team in tackles. As no-risk IDP investments go, you don't usually find one that's got a top-20 fantasy season under his belt and is just now entering the prime of his career to boot. Nigel Bradham, Buffalo Bills Rookie Kiko Alonso has garnered most of the attention in fantasy drafts this year, but Alonso isn't the only young inside linebacker who could be set to start racking up tackles in Western New York this fall. However, second-year pro Nigel Bradham , who had 57 tackles for the Bills in 2012, isn't making things easy on himself or IDP owners considering adding him ...

Southern Comfort: An IDP Breakdown of the AFC South fantasysharks.com Tue 7/23/13 9:06 AM

The Houston Texans are the cream of the crop in the division but may face a stiff challenge from the upstart Indianapolis Colts while Tennessee and Jacksonville look to climb into contention. From an Individual Defensive Player (IDP) perspective, the division has some very high-end names atop each position and then things get really interesting as the season is less than 50 days away. Enough of my babbling. Let's get to it! LINEBACKERS 1. Paul Posluszny, MLB, Jacksonville: Posluszny registered 106 total tackles last season on his way to a total of 139 stops. He also added a pair of sacks as well as three interceptions and two forced fumbles. In his two years in Jacksonville he has averaged 129 total tackles per season and figures to match that total again this season. Posluszny will be on the field plenty in 2013 as the Jaguars continue to struggle offensively. He's a high-end LB1. 2. Brian Cushing, ILB, Houston: Cushing is expected to be fully recovered from his ACL injury in time for training camp and will anchor the Texans defense in 2013. Cushing amassed 29 tackles in 4.5 games last season before going down for the season and will look to at least duplicate his 2011 output of 114 total tackles with four sacks and two forced fumbles. Cushing is just about all the Texans have in the middle of their defense and will put up LB1 numbers in 2013. 3. Jerrell Freeman, ILB, Indianapolis: Prior to last season Freeman joined the Colts from the Canadian Football League and found himself called upon to replace the injured Pat Angerer in the middle of the defense. The rest, as they say, is history. Freeman finished with 145 total stops, two sacks along with an interception (returned for a touchdown) and forced fumble. The Angerer era is over in Indianapolis, and look for Freeman to post high-end LB2 numbers this season. 4. Zach Brown, OLB, Tennessee: Brown closed out his rookie season with a flourish, posting 52 of his 93 total tackles from Week 8 on. He also added 4.5 sacks along with three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns in that time span. Brown has exceptional sideline-to-sideline speed and the ability to play above average in coverage. Expect nothing less than solid LB2 production from him in his second season. 5. Colin McCarthy, MLB, Tennessee: A balky ankle that McCarthy injured early last season limited him to only seven games played and a paltry tackle output of 38 total stops. While he worked behind Moise Fokou in organized team ...

IDP Sleepers - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Fri 10/19/12 7:00 AM

Wow. With six teams on a bye this week, finding sleeper candidates was going to be an adventure, and the injuries suffered by big name defenders has made it even more fun. Figuring out what defenses are going to do in an effort to replace their injured starters is always an adventure, and some situations remain in flux and will require careful observing in the next couple of weeks. That's why I love Individual Defensive Player (IDP) formats and the mysteries that it offers up on a weekly basis. Here are some Week 7 sleeper options that are primed for big fantasy outings. LINEBACKERS Zach Brown, OLB, Tennessee at Buffalo: Brown has been playing more physical of late and has put up eight solo tackles and a pass defended in the last two games. The Bills do not represent the best fantasy matchup for linebackers but they do run an offense that lends itself to an athletic player like Brown garnering more snaps. He could have a sneaky good fantasy week while chasing down Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. James Anderson, OLB, Carolina vs. Dallas: Anderson has been a productive fantasy option the last couple of seasons and started 2012 on a nice pace as well. In Weeks 4 and 5, he saw his snap count dip into the mid-40s range for Carolina, and that makes him sleeper material. The whole Panthers defense has struggled and they seem to be reaching for the best linebacker combination from week-to-week. Look for Anderson to have a surprisingly good fantasy week as he works his way back into the Carolina base defense. The Cowboys will afford Anderson plenty of opportunity to put up tackles (he has 37 total to date) as well as get some big plays on his 2012 resume. Victor Butler, OLB, Dallas at Carolina: Butler has played well while filling in for Anthony Spencer and looks to fill-in for him again in Week 7. He put up five solo tackles last week and also knocked a pass down. Butler has yet to post a sack, but he does have three quarterback hurries over the past three weeks and is an adequate pass rushing option. He's solid against the run, and while he is not as explosive as Spencer off the edge, he can bring efficient pressure. Look for a good fantasy week for Butler as the Panthers offense offers up tackle and big play opportunities for linebackers. Should Spencer actually play this week, insert him into this sleeper spot. Kavell Conner, ILB, Indianapolis vs. Cleveland: Conner remains fantasy relevant until Pat Angerer finally returns from injury. After a ...

IDP Handcuffs for 2012 fantasysharks.com Thu 8/23/12 9:06 AM

As sure as every Arian Foster owner is looking to add Ben Tate later in their fantasy draft as his handcuff, so too must the savvy Individual Defensive Player (IDP) owner back up his studs with their potential replacements. With the rash of preseason injuries to-date in 2012, it is more important than ever to make sure that our IDP handcuffs are in place. Unfortunately, it is not quite as defined on the defensive side of the ball as to who the next man up may be, and often times a defense may look for a multi-headed solution to their injured stars. Here is a look at some names to definitely monitor as replacements for the No. 1 man at their respective positions. Some of the names will be familiar and some of them will be from deeper down the depth charts as we look for IDP handcuffs. DJ Smith, ILB, Green Bay: This one is as simple as it gets. Smith has now assumed the position formerly held down by Top 5 fantasy linebacker, Desmond Bishop, who has undergone surgery to repair a damaged hamstring. Smith stepped in for an injured Bishop in 2011, amassing 57 total stops and an interception in nine games played. While he may lack some of the big play potential that Bishop brings to the table, he is an immediate three-down player on the Packers defense and a must have for Bishop owners. Barrett Ruud, ILB, New Orleans: While "Bounty Gate" rocked the Saints defense in the offseason with the suspensions of Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith, it is a rash of injuries to the linebacker position that continues to plague them in the preseason. Newly acquired Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne and Chris Chamberlain have all gone down with one ailment or another, forcing the Saints to trade for the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Tennessee Titan. Ruud was languishing in Seattle as the backup to rookie Bobby Wagner and now has new life with the Saints. Hawthorne (meniscus) and Lofton (high-ankle sprain) will both make it onto the field in 2012, while Chamberlain (torn ACL) has already been placed on Injured Reserve. Ruud was a fantasy beast from 2007-10 for Tampa Bay, and while he won't be asked to carry the load for New Orleans as much as he did back in his time with the Buccaneers, he will have fantasy value from the middle of the Saints defense in 2012. Chris Carter, OLB, Pittsburgh: While Smith and Ruud are somewhat known commodities at their positions, Carter is a wild card for the Steelers. With James Harrison iffy for the start of the season, Carter has been taking ...

IDP Waiver Wire: Week 14 fantasysharks.com Tue 12/6/11 4:00 AM

Week 14 of the 2011 fantasy football season has arrived, which means the regular season has concluded in many Individual Defensive Player (IDP) leagues, and in some the waiver wires have closed for business as the playoffs begin. However, the wire remains open in many leagues and the regular season hasn't yet ended in others, leaving fantasy owners in those leagues digging through the scraps to find upgrades or injury replacements, especially given some of the big names that were forced from the field last week. That said, here are some players that should be available on many IDP waiver wires that are worth targeting as we head into Week 14. PICKUP OF THE WEEK Craig Steltz, SS, Chicago: Steltz entered last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and played admirably, leading the team with 10 tackles and forcing a fumble. Given Major Wright's injury history and erratic play this season, there's an excellent chance that Steltz will get another start this week against the run-heavy Denver Broncos, making him more than worth a look from defensive back-needy IDP squads. Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Tampa Bay: The highly touted rookie didn't play much earlier in the season due to concerns about his surgically repaired knee, but the injury suffered by starter Michael Bennett has meant more playing time for Bowers, and he's certainly made the most of it, tallying eight tackles and 1.5 sacks last week, making him a viable IDP target for teams that are thin up front. Pernell McPhee, DE, Baltimore: The former Mississippi standout has seen increased playing time as the season has progressed and has seized the opportunity, logging eight tackles and three sacks over his past three games. Defensive ends in the 3-4 defense are always going to be streaky IDP options, but with the woeful Indianapolis Colts on tap McPhee is a decent plug-and-play for fantasy owners desperate for defensive line help. Larry Grant, ILB, San Francisco: Grant stepped in when Patrick Willis went down last week with a hamstring injury and performed fairly well, making six total tackles and recording a sack in a win over the St. Louis Rams. Willis will reportedly miss at least one more game, and IDP owners of either Willis or Pat Angerer may wish to look to the fourth-year veteran as an injury fill-in. Paris Lenon, ILB, Arizona: Lenon hasn't come anywhere close to his Top 20 season from a year ago, but the 10th-year pro has still had a decent statistical campaign, including a five-tackle, one-sack...
