The Chiefs plan to use new DE Mike DeVito as an early-down defender who leaves the field in the nickel package. In other words, they'll use DeVito to his strength. "There's nothing else I'd rather be doing," DeVito said. "I want to hit and be physical every play. If I don't hit somebody, I know something is wrong. That first- and second-down run game, that's where I live." The Chiefs' defensive front seven looks all set besides the inside linebacker position next to Derrick Johnson.

Chiefs signed DE Mike DeVito, formerly of the Jets, to a three-year, $12.6 million contract. DeVito, 29 in June, is a one-dimensional run stopper who will replace Glenn Dorsey as a better fit for Kansas City's 3-4. Last season, DeVito racked up 52 tackles, a sack, and two forced fumbles as a 15-game starter in Rex Ryan's 3-4.

Free agent DE Mike DeVito will test the market. The Jets have reportedly made re-signing DeVito a "priority," but he has eyes a payday. There's been reports of as many as six teams interested. We'll see if that's just an agent drumming up suitors for his two-down run-stuffer.

The Jets hope to re-sign DE Mike DeVito before the start of free agency, but the Newark Star-Ledger reports as many as six teams have "inquired" since the beginning of Saturday's legal tampering period. ESPN New York believes DeVito is the "best bet to stick around" of the Jets' in-house free agents, but Gang Green is going to have to pay up if he's truly drawing interest from six teams. It would be unwise to overpay for a player who turns 29 in July and doesn't play passing downs.

The Jets are expected to make free agent DE Mike DeVito a "priority" ahead of Tuesday's commencement of the signing period. It sounds like the sides will be negotiating this weekend. Beat writer Manish Mehta is skeptical of whether the Jets can afford DeVito, despite what will probably be a middling price tag. DeVito is a one-dimensional run stopper.

Jets DE Mike DeVito (questionable, calf) says he is 100 percent. DeVito participated in position drills at practice and looks set to play on Sunday against the Bills. With the Jets' front line likely to be without NT Sione Po'uha, having DeVito in the lineup can only be a good thing.

Jets LE Mike DeVito has agreed to slash his $2.26 million 2012 salary to a fully guaranteed $700,000. DeVito has already been paid a $500,000 roster bonus, however, while $950,000 of his $1.56 million pay-cut has been converted to a signing bonus. Also due a $350,000 workout bonus, DeVito's true lost wages come out to "only" $600,000. DeVito should end up backing up No. 16 pick Quinton Coples at left end.

Jets coach Rex Ryan says he doesn't know the role incumbent LE Mike DeVito will handle after the addition of Quinton Coples. Ryan called Coples the Jets' new starting left end, but regretted it soon after. "I really can't tell you (DeVito's) exact role right now," Ryan said. "I shouldn't have said that about Quinton either. ... I can tell you this about Mike DeVito: He is an outstanding football player." The Jets did recently pay DeVito a $500K roster bonus. He'll likely be a reserve in 2012.

Jets DL Mike DeVito underwent post-season shoulder surgery. There's no word yet on the severity of a timetable for a return. One of the league's underrated run defenders, DeVito graded out as Pro Football Focus' 10th-rated 3-4 end for the 2011 season.
