The Charlotte Observer believes S Michael Mitchell would start over Haruki Nakamura and D.J. Campbell if the season started today. Luckily, the season doesn't start for another five months. Veteran Charles Godfrey has one of the safety spots locked up, but the other is up for competition. Nakamura started 13 games in 2012, but he was routinely burned in coverage. Look for Carolina to target a safety with one of its five picks in the draft.

Panthers agreed to terms with free agent S Michael Mitchell, formerly of the Raiders. Mitchell joins an underwhelming safety group that includes Haruki Nakamura and D.J. Campbell, but is still unlikely to push for a starting job. Primarily a run stopper, Mitchell should also contribute on special teams.

New Raiders coach Dennis Allen has singled out fourth-year SS Mike Mitchell "more than once" for his training camp play. "He's got some speed, he's got some talent," Allen observed. Mitchell is a bit behind after missing offseason practices due to a knee scope, but he's healthy now and picking up Allen's defense. Mitchell would still need a Tyvon Branch injury for consistent playing time. He'll open the year on special teams.
