Week 2: Your Team at First Glance fantasysharks.com Fri 9/16/11 5:32 AM

Welcome to Week 2 of the Brew Crew Corner. The season is on a roll now, and before you know it, you'll be gearing up for the playoffs. The season moves quick so enjoy it while you can. The first week of the season has passed and there were a ton of surprises. You always have players jump out of nowhere and produce such as Randall Cobb from the Green Bay Packers. You then have players disappoint such as Dwayne Bowe of the Kansas City Chiefs. The most important advice I can give you is to not overreact to Week 1 performances. If you had a player such as Steve Smith put up monster numbers, you need to curb your expectations. As teams get more film on Cam Newton, they will be able to take away his comfort zone and that will impact Smith's stats. The Carolina Panthers also have one of the toughest schedules this season so they will be facing much better defenses then they played last week. As expected with the shortened offseason, there were plenty of injuries in the first week. Hopefully you drafted good depth at the position to cover starts until your injured player returns. If you have a player like Danny Amendola or Marques Colston, it may be harder to hold on to these players if they will miss a good amount of time. Think before you drop them from your team. Take the time this week to review your team and which players fit your roster. Make the necessary changes to your roster now. There was a player in one of my leagues who drafted Peyton Manning and had David Garrard as his backup. As you can see he didn't have a starting quarterback for Week 1. Another team in a different league didn't bother to pick up a kicker and was penalized all the points they scored with Tom Brady. It sounds silly but it happens all the time. If you want to win your league, you have to prepare accordingly. Look over your team this week. Don't rush to make foolish trades or waiver pickups because a player did not perform well. The Golden Mug Award Awarded to the fantasy players who came through for their team. Tom Brady -- 32/48, 517 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT. Brady posted his best fantasy game since Week 6 of last year when he put up 380 yards and six touchdowns against the Tennessee Titans. Ray Rice -- 19 carries, 107 yards, 1 TD; 4 receptions, 42 yards, 1 TD. Rice was the top running back in Week 1 and he did it against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Rice had 52 rushing yards combined last season when facing the Steelers. The Urinal Cake Award Awarded to the fantasy players ...

Against the Odds (2011) - Week 1 fantasysharks.com Fri 9/9/11 6:53 AM

Picking games is an interesting task when Week 1 rolls around. Game lines tend to be on the conservative side, with little for experts to go on beyond preseason games and/or games from the previous year. Take heart, though. Vinnie's got you covered. Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans (-3): The absence of Peyton Manning will make all the difference, with this game's line in mind. The enormous amount of resources Houston's organization has spent to address defensive needs doesn't guarantee a shutout of the Colts or anything like that, but it does point to Kerry Collins having a challenge before him. The Texans running game's owning of Indy's defense was well chronicled a year ago, and while Arian Foster isn't a lock to play this time around, one would think Derrick Ward and Ben Tate could get the job done if called upon. Indy's pass defense also doesn't match up so well against Matt Schaub, a cohesive and underrated Texans offensive line, Andre Johnson, and Owen Daniels. Gimme the Texans minus the points. Philadelphia Eagles @ St. Louis Rams (+5): While many are just about ready to hand over the Lombardi trophy to Andy Reid and the Eagles, St. Louis is in prime position to splash 'em with a cold dose of reality. There will be no Philly rout, much to the chagrin of Michael Vick fans and fantasy owners. In fact, what better coach to whup up on his old team than Steve Spagnuolo? The Rams defense is up to the task of manhandling Philly's shaky offensive line, and will give Vick all he can handle. Steven Jackson in particular, meanwhile, is in line for a very productive day running the football. Gimme the Rams plus the points. New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins (+6.5): Say it with me - all Brady, all evening. Chad Henne and Brandon Marshall have demonstrated some chemistry, nice for Dolphins fans, and Miami's defense can be disruptive to an opponent's running game. No problem. With Miami's pass defense looking vulnerable and considering all the weapons Tom Brady has to throw to, expect the Patriots to have a lot of success passing. Oh, and don't bother expecting much from Reggie Bush, who will find very little room to maneuver with the ball in his hands. Gimme the Patriots minus the points. Detroit Lions @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5): Not a division rivalry, but one of the more intriguing games on the slate for this weekend nonetheless. Expect the visiting Lions to perform well offensively, big plays resulting from both running and passing plays. ...

Shooting for two Quarterbacks fantasysharks.com Tue 8/30/11 6:41 AM

How y'all doing again? Hopefully many of you have already gotten a few of your drafts under your belt. The NFL season is almost a week away, and I can't wait. If you have a late draft, here is a strategy that you might be forced to use, or you can plan to do this as well. I always like to have two plans for each position when I'm drafting. The first is who I would draft if I drafted that position early. The second is if I have to wait and draft that position later. If you are thinking about waiting on a quarterback, or just didn't grab any of the Top 7, then you might be shooting for the back-to-back quarterback strategy. In my opinion there are seven top quarterbacks out there this year. In any order they are: Michael Vick, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tony Romo. If you failed to pull the trigger and draft one of them, then you're looking at the second tier of quarterbacks, and you're going to want to grab two. You're going to want to draft them "on the tail" as the forum members like to say, or the part of the draft where you have the least amount of other people drafting between your picks. If you have a high draft pick, this would be Rounds 6 and 7. If you have a low draft pick, it would be Rounds 5 and 6 or 7 and 8, depending on how quickly those other quarterbacks go off the board. Here are three different pairings of quarterbacks that you could draft and play matchups every week, in order to maximize the amount of points from your quarterback position. The first column is who you would pick first, and the second column is your next pick. Your first pick will look like you're simply picking a quarterback for your team, then the second pick finishes off your matchup plays for when your first quarterback plays some tough defenses. In some cases the second pick could be a reach, but it's part of your strategy. By this time in the draft you should be plenty stocked up on wide receivers, running backs and maybe a tight end, so you shouldn't be worrying about missing out on just one. You need to get both quarterbacks for this strategy to work, otherwise you're just going to have a mediocre quarterback on your team. Ben Roethlisburger and Kevin Kolb Roethlisberger has a nice start to his season and a nice playoff schedule too, but in the middle of his season he has a few tough games, games where Kolb gets some easy matchups. Kolb starts out with a game against Carolina at home, so you'll be able to see ...
