Chargers OLB Larry English confirmed he was a healthy scratch in Week 1. English is coming off offseason foot surgery and missed three of four preseason games. He says he's "100 percent," but the coaches may feel otherwise. The 2009 No. 16 overall pick has rarely been healthy during his NFL career.

Chargers OLB Larry English was installed with the first-team defense this week, ahead of Travis LaBoy. LaBoy's body can't hold up to the NFL grind as a full-time player, so he was never in the mix for that kind of a role. Beat writer Kevin Acee suspects English and LaBoy will wind up sharing snaps, with English probably getting slightly more. Shaun Phillips remains the heavy favorite to lead San Diego in sacks.

Chargers activated OLB Larry English (foot) from active/PUP. English will run with the second team, which is where he'll stay until he proves himself physically able to handle the rigors of an NFL season. Expectations for the No. 16 overall pick in 2009 should be limited.

Coach Norv Turner said that OLB Larry English (foot surgery) may not play until the third preseason game. English, the No. 16 overall pick in 2009, missed eight games a year ago and has just five sacks in his career. With this foot issue proving to be nagging, expectations for this season need to be held in check. The Chargers signed OLB Travis LaBoy in free agency as insurance.
