It isn't yet clear if Trask will replace Tom Brady, who announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Despite being a relatively early draft pick last spring, 64th overall, Trask was a healthy scratch each week of his rookie season. Laine notes that the Bucs drafted Trask with the thought he'd replace Brady in 2023, not 2022, but the franchise is on a new timeline after the future Hall of Famer announced his retirement Tuesday. While the Bucs figure to look at the market for veteran signal-callers, Trask should at least have the inside track for the No. 2 role entering his second season, and if things break in his favor he could even get his shot to compete for the starting job. Brady's backup from this past season, 32-year-old Blaine Gabbert, is scheduled for unrestricted free agency in the offseason.

Trask (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's contest against the Falcons, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers official website reports.
EDGE Analysis
Trask isn't active for Week 2 as the Buccaneers elected to keep Blaine Gabbert as the backup behind Tom Brady. The 23-year-old showed promise in his final preseason action after a relatively rough first two games.

Trask completed 12 of 14 passes for 146 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Buccaneers' 23-16 preseason win over the Texans on Saturday night. He also netted minus-4 yards on four carries and lost two fumbles.
EDGE Analysis
The disparity between the ultra-efficient passing effort and the two miscues embodies the rollercoaster performance typical of a rookie quarterback. Despite Trask's undeniable struggles over the first two preseason games and his pair of turnovers, Greg Auman of The Athletic includes the rookie as the third quarterback in his 53-man roster projection, with Ryan Griffin as the odd man out and heading to the practice squad.

Trask completed 13 of 26 passes for 131 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Buccaneers' 34-3 preseason loss to the Titans on Saturday night. He also rushed twice for minus-3 yards and fumbled once, but it was recovered by the offense.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie played the entire second half and certainly took his lumps, short-circuiting a pair of drives with interceptions at the Titans' 47-yard line and midfield. On the brighter side of things, Trask's final line was appreciably better than the 4-for-15 showing he put up in his pro debut against the Bengals last Saturday, and he certainly will benefit from the extended amount of reps he received while dropping back 26 times. The University of Florida product has already demonstrated why he's a clear long-term developmental project at this point in time, but he'll look to head into the regular season with a good showing in what will very likely be extended playing time again in next Saturday's exhibition finale versus the Texans.

Trask completed four of 15 passes for 35 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Bengals.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie entered the game midway through the third quarter as Tampa Bay's fourth QB of the night and did not look ready for prime time. Trask, taken in the second round of the 2021 draft, is purely a developmental project with Tom Brady locked into the starting role and veteran Blaine Gabbert in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. The Bucs' season likely would be in a massive tailspin if the 23-year-old were to get any regular-season reps.

Trask, whose reps in training camp have been fairly limited thus far because of the players in front of him, nevertheless is picking up a great deal from daily one-on-one sessions with coaches and from the other players in the quarterback room, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Florida product unsurprisingly is doing a lot of listening and not much throwing at the moment, as Tom Brady, Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin all are prioritized in terms of getting practice reps. Nevertheless, Trask is making the best of the situation by getting some early work in each day with quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen and also peppering his experienced position mates with plenty of questions during film study. Trask could well end up a healthy inactive most weeks this coming season, but given that Brady and Gabbert particularly may not see much action in the preseason, the rookie could get a solid allotment of live reps during the three exhibition contests.

Trask was quick to pick up coach Bruce Arians' offensive system during the Buccaneers' offseason program, Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports. "Yeah, it's not easy when you're going against our defense," said Arians. "He has seen a multitude of coverages and blitzes, so I'm really impressed. Having worked with guys for the first time in this offense, he's at the top of the list as far as the learning curve and he's throwing the football really well."
EDGE Analysis
The rookie second-round pick thus far has made an impact on anyone who's worked with him, with Scott Smith of the team's official site reporting during OTAs that quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich had both taken note of how coachable and studious Trask was from Day 1. The Florida product is expected to have at least two seasons to operate under Tom Brady, which is about the highest caliber of apprenticeship going for a developing signal-caller. While Trask is likely to find reps at a premium during training camp with four quarterbacks present, he should see his fair share of playing time during the Bucs' three preseason games.

The Buccaneers selected Trask in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 64th overall.
EDGE Analysis
Trask posted big numbers at Florida, especially in a 2020 season in which he threw for 4,283 yards, 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 68.9 percent of his passes at 9.8 yards per attempt. Trask's production is largely attributed to the scheme and talented pass-catching personnel he enjoyed throughout his college tenure, a group that included Kyle Pitts, Kadarius Toney, Van Jefferson and Freddie Swain. Nevertheless, he makes for an interesting project for the Buccaneers to develop behind Tom Brady. At 6-foot-5, 236 pounds, Trask has a prototypical build if nothing else.
