Jacobs, whose fifth-year contract option was turned down by the franchise this spring, logged seven touches in this past Thursday's preseason opener, an outcome that McDaniels downplayed, noting that the Raiders are using the preseason to get their running backs acclimated to game action, while building chemistry behind the team's offensive line. Also in the mix for touches in Las Vegas' backfield behind Jacobs -- who is listed atop the team's posted depth chart -- are Zamir White, Kenyan Drake, Ameer Abdullah and Brandon Bolden.

Raiders coach Josh McDaniel suggested Jacobs played in Thursday's preseason opener because it's difficult for running backs to simulate game action in practice, NFL.com reports. "I always think it's good for backs to carry the ball in the preseason," McDaniels said. "There's a lot of things that happen when you're getting tackled and hit that you can't simulate in practice."

It reeks of coach-speak, but that doesn't mean Jacobs' appearance in the Hall of Fame Game is cause for total panic. For one thing, the Raiders didn't rest all their starters the way the Jaguars did, instead selectively sitting players based on age and/or status. And while Jacobs may be one of the Raiders' most prominent players from a fantasy standpoint, he doesn't compare all that favorably to other starting RBs around the league. He does compare favorably to the other guys on the Vegas depth chart, however, and he showed it Thursday night with seven touches for 44 yards. Rookie fourth-round pick Zamir White also made his case for a role with 11 carries for 52 yards, getting all his work after Jacobs was done for the night. Austin Walter and Ameer Abdullah also had their moments, but they're probably more in the mix for passing-down work, as is Brandon Bolden (who was rested). Last and perhaps least, Kenyan Drake had a rough Thursday night, managing only nine yards on five carries and working behind both Jacobs and White. McDaniels may not intend to use Jacobs as a workhorse, but the fourth-year pro remains a favorite to take most of the carries and a portion of the RB targets.

Jacobs figures to see similar usage in at least two of the Raiders' remaining three preseason games as a tune-up for another season as the team's lead back.

As the coming season approaches, the 2019 first-rounder heads a running back corps that also includes Kenyan Drake, Brandon Bolden and rookie fourth-rounder Zamir White. With the Raiders having declined Jacobs' fifth-year contract option, the 24-year-old approaches the coming campaign in a contract year with much to prove. If he can stay healthy, look for Jacobs to continue to handle a key early-down role for Las Vegas, with Drake mixing in and both Bolden and White also candidates to earn touches. Though Reed and Vic Tafur both suggest that White has the potential to start down the road, it remains to be seen how heavily he'll be used as a rookie. Regardless of how the Raiders' carries end up being distributed, however, the team's backfield will be working within the framework of an offense that's been fortified by the addition of elite wideout Davante Adams.

With no report of offseason surgery or a major injury, Jacobs seemingly has a good chance to be ready for the start of training camp in late July. He's entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract after the Raiders declined to pick up his fifth-year option for $8.03 million. Between that and the presence of a new coaching staff, Jacobs won't automatically have the same role as in past seasons, though it helps his cause to have modest competition for early down snaps -- namely 28-year-old Kenyan Drake (coming back from a major ankle injury) and fourth-round rookie Zamir White. For passing situations, the Raiders have a few more options, with Jacobs and Drake joined by offseason signees Ameer Abdullah and Brandon Bolden.

The Raiders have elected to not pick up Jacobs' fifth-year contract option, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.

The same applies to fellow 2019 first-rounders Clelin Ferrell and Johnathan Abram, though GM Dave Ziegler relayed that the team looks "forward to working with all three players and (will) evaluate each situation individually moving forward." With that, Jacobs remains under contract with Las Vegas this coming season, and it's still possible the Raiders will look to keep the 24-year-old around beyond 2022, especially if produces well in the final year of his rookie deal. In 15 games last year, Jacobs carried 217 times for 872 yards and nine TDs, while adding 54 catches (on 64 targets) for 348 yards. He's slated to reprise his lead role in the team's backfield this coming season, with Kenyan Drake set to work in a complementary role and Brandon Bolden and Ameer Abdullah on hand in reserve.
