Hoping for Henne: Why the Jaguars QB Battle is Critical to Fantasy fantasysharks.com Mon 7/29/13 6:00 AM1 Comment

I'm a firm believer that Blaine Gabbert is the problem in Jacksonville. Yes, I understand that Chad Henne only won one game last year in Gabbert's stead. Yes, I'm aware they started roughly a dozen different running backs last season. Yep, I know the players are adjusting to their fourth different head coach in three years. Yes, I'm aware their defense is in shambles, not to mention full-on rebuild mode. Yeah, yeah, I get it -- there are more problems than Gabbert. But for fantasy purposes, Gabbert is the type of problem that could soil your early-round picks of running back Maurice Jones-Drew and wide receiver Cecil Shorts. And if you're keeping one eye open for sleepers like wide receiver Justin Blackmon and tight end Marcedes Lewis, you'd do better to doze off if Gabbert's at the helm. The value of Jaguars players this year hinges on the team's starting quarterback. If you plan on drafting any Jaguar this season, fall to your knees and pray that Henne wins the starting job in preseason. Don't think it's that big a deal? Here, have some stats. We'll start with 2012 Gabbert. 182 : Gabbert's average passing yards per game in nine full starts. That means only 18.2 fantasy points to be split among all Jaguars pass catchers. 1 : The number of touchdowns per game that Gabbert threw. That's only six extra points available for one of those yardage-starved receivers. 17.7 : Gabbert's average number of completions per game. If you're in a points per reception league, 18 more points are up for grabs for Jones-Drew, Shorts, Blackmon, Lewis, Jordan Shipley, Ace Sanders, Mohamed Massaquoi and anyone else with a pair of hands. 80 : The number of yards Shorts accumulated on a last-minute touchdown catch to win the Week 3 game against Indianapolis. Broken pass coverage and Shorts' breakaway speed made the touchdown possible. 75 : The amount of passing yards Gabbert had against the Colts prior to the aforementioned Shorts touchdown catch. Those numbers add up to a lot of sad faces and empty seats in Jacksonville. In fantasy land, those numbers barely add up to flex-worthy. Let's switch gears to the running game while Gabbert's under center. 91 : Total team rushing yards per game in games which both Gabbert and Maurice Jones-Drew played. Total team rushing yardage, not Jones-Drew's yardage. Carries from backup running backs and scrambles from Gabbert cut into those 91 yards per game. Keep all this in mind before you spend a second-round pick on Jones-Drew ...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 17 fantasysharks.com Tue 12/25/12 5:30 AM

Even with only one week of the NFL season to go, the waiver wonders never cease! The pickings are slim, but there are a few stars shining brighter than the others that can guide you to sweet victory in Week 17. A pair get mentioned as solid pickups, with a handful of players after that in the deeper categories. Something for everyone this week! Solid Pickup RB Ryan Grant, Green Bay The Packers continue to lose running backs, with Alex Green joining the ranks of Cedric Benson and James Starks on the sideline. Green was a surprising scratch this week, handing not only the starting job, but the position of only trustworthy back dressed in this week's game against the Tennessee TItans. Grant responded with more than 100 yards in total offense to go along with two touchdowns. The status of Green will determine how many times Grant will touch the ball in the finale against the Minnesota Vikings, at the very least we expect that Grant will get 60-75 percent of the workload, which is enough to warrant fantasy consideration for those in need at the position. K Blair Walsh, Minnesota A week after drilling a trio of kicks from more than 50 yards (on a day where he connected five times in total!), Walsh backed that effort up by connecting three times against the Houston Texans, including once from more than 50 yards. The Vikings will be home the final week of the season, in a must win game against their divisional rival Green Bay Packers. Every point will be crucial, and look for Walsh to continue his hot streak with another strong performance to close out a tremendous rookie season. On the Radar RB Montell Owens, Jacksonville With Maurice Jones-Drew still on the shelf, Owens tabulated more than 100 yards in total offense against the New England Patriots. He is splitting time with Richard Murphy, but a weak Tennessee squad is on the schedule for this upcoming week. The status of Jones-Drew may cut into Owens' time, but, if he does not play, Owens will have the opportunity to put up another 100 yards of total offense. WR Jason Avant, Philadelphia Nick Foles has been using Avant as his checkdown over the middle, so Avant has been racking up the catches of late. He has caught 19 passes in the last four games, including eight for 70 yards this week against the Washington Redskins. Especially in points per reception leagues, Avant is worth considering. TE Lance Kendricks, St. Louis What a sight it was to see Kendricks lumbering down the field on his way...

2012 Conference Championships: Turnovers and Tight Ends fantasysharks.com Sat 1/21/12 1:06 AM

Welcome to the Conference Championship edition of the Brew Crew Corner. Two games this week will decide who will go to the Super Bowl. Last weekend it was turnovers that sunk three teams while tight ends decided some other games. The Houston Texans threw three interceptions and a lost a fumble, the New Orleans Saints threw two interceptions and lost three fumbles, while the Green Bay Packers had one interception and lost three fumbles in their loss. Not taking care of the football gave the other teams additional opportunities, and it cost these three teams dearly. I've never seen a year where we've had so many stud tight ends playing in the playoffs, and last weekend we saw four tight ends dominate in games. For the New England Patriots, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez destroyed the Denver Broncos. Gronkowski had 145 yards and three touchdowns while Hernandez had four receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown, and he added five carries for 55 yards. In San Francisco, Vernon Davis had seven catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns as he out performed Jimmy Graham, who had five receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Tight ends will definitely be a factor in the Conference Championship games. Look for Jake Ballard and even Dennis Pitta to have key grabs this weekend.
