Fantasy 411 - Week 6 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/16/12 6:30 AM

Have you ever watched a shark eat? Sharks don't eat, they devour their prey! With six weeks in the books and the standings starting to take shape, now is the time for you to become the shark of your league and devour your competitors. Now is the time to sniff around for blood in the water and to take advantage of an owner who is pounding the "PANIC" button. Remember when Wes Welker was in the doghouse, on the trading block and on the downswing of his career? All at the same time! No? Well it was only a few short weeks ago. Fantasy football owners are notorious for living in a vacuum and failing to see the bigger picture. After only registering three catches in Week 1, many fantasy pundits were quick to scrutinize the New England Patriots' slot receiver and his role in the offense. With four consecutive 100-yard games, Welker is suddenly a fantasy darling again. Smart fantasy owners knew to give Welker more time to see if the stories of his demise were true or not. The point is that while flash in the pan talents like Kevin Ogletree were trendy pickups, the players like Welker, with an established track record, shouldn't be moved so quickly. Who should you trade, trade for, and what to do with struggling stars? Here are things the way I see them. Many owners were clamoring Monday morning with the performance Shonn Greene turned in on Sunday, but I'm here to warn you against putting too much stock in one performance. Greene's 161 yards and three touchdowns came against a porous Indianapolis defense. Throw in the fact that Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight were out with injuries, giving Greene four times more carries than he got the week before, and this has all the makings of a fluke performance. Greene and the New York Jets will face off with a stingy New England run defense next week, and his performance in Week 7 will go a long way in establishing his true value. His value will likely never be as high, so if you get an attractive offer for Greene this week, sell him before the other owner remembers how mediocre he typically performs. Chris Johnson was dropped in my league this week, and I can't even bring myself to drop Dennis Pitta to put in a claim for him. In my league, the Tennessee Titans' fan sits tied for last, mostly the result of abysmal running back play, so I know Johnson wouldn't get to me anyway. Johnson is not dependable, but it's not time to give up on him and drop him just yet. Who are you going to pick up when you drop Johnson? In ...

Against the Odds - Week 4 (Friday Edition) fantasysharks.com Fri 9/28/12 1:00 PM

This week's lines are from usatoday.com (as of Thursday night). Locks New Orleans @ Green Bay (O/U 52.5) If you had told me before the NFL season started that either the Saints will start the season with a record of 0-4 or the Packers will be 1-3, I would have shed this bag and retired from my professional gambling career. Well, that's exactly the scenario that we have this week. What a crazy start to the season! The Packers look to get back on track after facing tough defenses in their first three games against San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle. Not to mention getting robbed of a win in Seattle by a horrible call. I can't stress enough how happy I am that the real refs are back! Facing the Saints defense this week looks to be the perfect matchup for the Packers offense to get out of their funk. The Saints have one of the worst defenses in the league, giving up an average of 34 points per game and ranking last, giving up 477 total yards per game. QB Aaron Rodgers will look to feast on the Saints D and finally have his breakout game of the season. The Saints are also dead last in the NFL against the run, giving up 215 yards per game. Packers RB Cedric Benson isn't anything special but he should find some running room and get a score of his own on the ground. As usual, Saints QB Drew Brees will have plenty of options to throw to and will put up good numbers but when your defense acts as a sieve, it'll be difficult to keep up with the Packers. The last time these teams played on Sept. 8, 2011, 76 total points were scored. Look for another high scoring game this weekend. Gimme the over. San Francisco @ NY Jets (+3.5) The Niners were upset 24-13 on the road last week against the Minnesota Vikings. It was a bad loss but I'm willing to give the Niners a mulligan and expect this to be a wakeup call for one of the top teams in the league. Instead of heading back to the West Coast only to have to return back east for the game, the team has decided for the second year in a row to stay in Youngstown, Ohio and prepare for their matchup with the Jets. It proved to be a smart move last year after beating both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Jets were dealt a huge blow last week, losing defensive back Darrelle Revis for the year due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The team has asked RB Joe McKnight to learn the cornerback position, a position that he has not played since high school. I don't see this ...

Monday Morning Takeaway: Preseason Week 1 (Cont.) fantasysharks.com Mon 8/13/12 8:50 AM

New York Jets 6, Cincinnati 17 Jets The Jets offense was hard to watch, and even harder to write about. The blocking performance from the offensive line was awful in both the pass and run game as starting quarterback Mark Sanchez was unable to generate consistent production. Shonn Greene continued his usual plodding style picking up a meager 11 yards on five carries. I was hoping so badly for Bilal Powell or Joe McKnight to jump off the screen and take over the Jets backfield. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The highlight of the night for the Jets was two longer runs by Tim Tebow, immediately followed by a terrible interception. Even more goofy was watching Tebow run down on punt coverage. I'm not sure any Jets player is worthy of drafting. Bengals Bengals' quarterback Andy Dalton picked up right where he left in 2011 with solid decision making, accepting what the defense allowed him, while managing his team on long sustained drives. Dalton made it a point to include both AJ Green and tight end Jermaine Gresham. Overall a decent outing for the Bengals' passing game. As expected, BenJarvis Green-Ellis started in the Bengals' backfield. More of a straight line runner, the Law Firm displayed his usual powerful running style with soft hands while excelling in pass blocking. As one of the league's few 3-down running backs, the Law Firm is deserving of upper RB2 value garnering early 4th round consideration. The lowlight for the Bengals were numerous injuries including; starting left guard Travelle Warton, defensive end Carlos Dunlap and middle linebacker Rey Maualuga. Miami 7, Tampa Bay 20 Dolphins David Garrard will be lost for the preseason after undergoing a surgical procedure on his troublesome knee. Stepping in as the Miami starting quarterback was Matt Moore. In my humble opinion Moore is the Rodney Dangerfield of football, brimming with talent, but having played for terrible football teams under constant turmoil. Moore didn't let me down opening the game with two solid drives while delivering the football with velocity and accuracy. Moore carries zero fantasy value due to a lack of team talent at the wide receiver position. After going 14-for-21 with 167 yards and one touchdown, rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill has gained rave reviews in the media postgame reports. Although impressive for a rookie performance, Tannehill's production didn't begin until late in the 3rd quarter against the Bucs 3rd string defense. Don't be ...

Hola gang. Here are some quick target hits from week eleven. Eleventh Heaven Joe McKnight-McKnight earned himself a seat at the roundtable Thursday night with his 121 total yard performance (59 on ground, 62 through the air on six receptions).  His role certainly increased with Tomlinson sidelined but when he got his opportunity,McKnight ran with [...]

5.5 Things I Think I Think fantasysharks.com Thu 10/6/11 9:04 AM

1 -- Andre Johnson will miss more than the "low-end" three weeks that are being estimated. Johnson ended up missing seven games in 2007 when he was recovering from knee surgery and the Houston Texans said he would only be out three weeks. Given the situation in the AFC South and the recent injury dealings with Arian Foster, I believe that Houston will be much more likely to proceed with caution with Johnson and allow him ample time to recover. Owen Daniels will likely be the primary fantasy football benefactor, not Jacoby Jones. 2 -- The New York Jets' commitment to again define themselves with a "Ground and Pound" approach does not mean the emergence of Shonn Greene to fantasy relevance. Greene has been given ample opportunity to catapult himself to fantasy prominence this season by getting 51 carries while LaDanian Tomlinson has only gotten 20. With a 2-2 record and a road matchup with the New England Patriots staring them straight in the face, look for the Jets to lean on the veteran Tomlinson for stability. Tomlinson can be counted on as a pass catcher and capable blocker. Don't count Joe McKnight out of the mix to earn a few carries either after the spark he has provided in the return game. 3 -- Cam Newton has got to come back down to earth sometime ... maybe, but I have no earthly idea when. Critics were quick to write off Newton's Week 1 performance as being against a weak Arizona Cardinals team. His only subpar performance came in a home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, while he put up great numbers against the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. The Jaguars game was asterisked by a torrential downpour that hindered the Panthers' ability to pass the ball. Put aside trying to gauge Newton's ability by his opponent and understand that these are not John Fox's Panthers anymore. Newton has attempted at least 34 passes in all four games so far. Figure in that Newton has four rushing touchdowns and with his size and ability he will always be a candidate to score in the red zone. The bottom line is that Newton is quickly entering fantasy quarterback elite status. Forget the matchups. Start him! 4 -- Curtis Painter has more fantasy value than you might think. Painter is no Peyton Manning. I know, I know ... newsflash, right? It is likely that Painter should not appear in a single fantasy lineup this season. That doesn't mean he doesn't have fantasy value. Painter's experience and familiarity with the Indianapolis Colts' system means that if he ...
