Kearse (leg) announced Tuesday in a post on his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional football.

After going undrafted out of Washington in 2012, Kearse went on to spend eight seasons in the NFL with the Seahawks and Jets, totaling 255 receptions for 3,291 yards and 17 touchdowns. The most notable moments of the 30-year-old receiver's career came in Seattle's back-to-back Super Bowl trips in 2013 and 2014. He notched four receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's Super Bowl 48 win over the Broncos and recorded a highlight-reel catch on the Seahawks' final drive of their eventual Super Bowl 49 loss to the Patriots. While with the Lions in 2019, Kearse missed the entire season with a broken leg suffered in a preseason contest, and he ultimately didn't find an opportunity with another team after hitting the open market in March.

Kearse (foot) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

It seemed evident upon replay of the injury that Kearse would miss an extended amount of time, so this designation shouldn't come as much of a shock. The veteran wide receiver was expected to have a significant role in the passing attack behind Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola, but that will now fall into the hands of relative newcomers Tommylee Lewis, Brandon Powell or Andy Jones.

Kearse was diagnosed with a broken leg after he was carted off the field during Thursday's preseason game against the Patriots, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Kearse had to be carted off the field with an aircast, so there were signs it could be a serious injury. It what was supposed to be a bounce back season for the veteran, he'll know be facing a lengthy rehab process. Tommylee Lewis and Andy Jones could stand to benefit as long as Kearse is sidelined.

He mentioned in April that he'd be interested in a return to Seattle, but the Seahawks then used three draft picks on wide receivers. The 29-year-old averaged just 4.9 yards on 76 targets last season, finishing last in the league among all WRs with 30 or more receptions. Kearse missed Week 17 with an Achilles injury, but his workout with Detroit apparently went well enough to induce a contract offer -- just not an offer to his liking.

He's 29 years old and owns a lifetime mark of just 7.3 yards per target, but he's only two years removed from a career-best 2017 campaign with 65 catches for 810 yards and five scores. Kearse caught on with Seattle as an undrafted rookie in 2012 and stayed with the team until he was traded to the Jets at the end of the 2017 preseason. It isn't clear if his interest in a Seahawks reunion is mutual, but it would make sense given the current state of the team's depth chart at wide receiver.

Kearse took a major step back after recording career highs across the board with 65 catches, 810 yards and five touchdowns in his first season with the Jets. Kearse, who turns 29 in February, is slated to become a free agent this offseason on the heels of a 2018 season in which he logged 37 catches (on 76 targets) for 371 yards and a TD in 14 games.

What appears to be Kearse's third straight absence at practice this week puts him on track to miss the season finale at New England. The 28-year-old suffered the injury Week 16 against the Packers and underwent X-rays on Monday. Quincy Enunwa (ankle) has been similarly absent this week, leaving little depth at wide receiver behind top-target Robby Anderson.
