The Diary of a Fantasy Virgin : Week 6 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/18/11 9:00 AM

This week is about finding the end zone, or shall I say about how to not find the end zone? This is supposedly happening more and more regularly in the NFL, but there are strange sequences occurring. By Week 6, the league is running through the paces of the haves and the have nots. Why Is It So Lonely Here In The End Zone? By Week 6, there are good stories like the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions. By Week 6, there are bad stories like Indianapolis, Miami, Minnesota, St. Louis and Denver. To make matters worse, it does not mean a thing if you have a stud performer on one of the bad teams because at times the best they can score is three points. For example, see the Rams with their three points and the Vikings with their 10 points scored. Now is the time when you figure out that all that pre-draft work means nothing if your team cannot find the end zone. I guess that is why it is so lonely for some teams. I Will Take One Touchdown Shaken Not Stirred Sometimes you look at your team and they pile it on like what happened in Week 2 with 167 points from two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and three receiving touchdowns, making six touchdowns overall. Come on! Spread the wealth around. This week I managed just one touchdown. Just one! In the NFL, when you have six players capable of touchdowns and you only get one measly touchdown it makes you wonder how you got to 84 points at all. Gone are the days when I would get that from Jeremy Maclin and Michael Vick alone. It is time to do some fantasy football soul searching. The seas are getting a bit rough. Dear Diary It was good to be back after a long vacation. I wrote two articles whilst on vacation and ran a half-marathon. All in a good week's work I say, and as weird as this sounds, it is not the first time nor will it probably be the last. Beware of these times. These are the times that involve summer waning and the leaves are on their way out. In New England, it appears that the collective populace are bracing for another tedious winter. The very last winter was so insidious that it is often spoke of in hushed tones. I am in it at this time for the leaves which are not as pretty as they normally are due to Hurricane Irene. Thanks, Irene. Not only did you take away power for several days but you took my bright reds and beautiful oranges. I see them all around New England but not here in our neck of the woods. That is why we have to stick our neck out and visit Maine I guess. Master D. ...

In The Spotlight: Week 6 In Review fantasysharks.com Mon 10/17/11 9:06 AM2 Comments

THE TOP STORYLINES: The Upstart 49ers Hand The Lions Their First Loss & A Post-Game Skirmish Between Jim Harbaugh & Jim Schwartz The surging San Francisco 49ers prevailed in an emotional, hard-hitting and penalty-filled contest, knocking the Detroit Lions from the ranks of the unbeaten by a final of 25-19. After struggling most of the game, Alex Smith (125-1-1) tossed a touchdown pass with 1:51 remaining, and David Akers nailed a 37-yard field goal with 1:01 left to secure the win. Frank Gore paced San Francisco with 15-141-1 and Michael Crabtree compiled 9-77-0. The 49ers' defense also notched five sacks on the afternoon. For the Lions, Matthew Stafford posted 293-2-0, while Calvin Johnson accumulated 7-113-0 and Brandon Pettigrew amassed 8-42-1. The NFL is planning to review the post-game confrontation between San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh and Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz. In case you missed it, Harbaugh used his right hand to shake hands with Schwartz and slapped him on the back with his other hand. Claiming to have been shoved and claiming to have heard some "colorful language" directed at him, Schwartz charged Harbaugh as the teams ran into the tunnels, but the two were separated by a host of players and team officials during a very emotionally charged scene. What if Detroit and San Francisco have to face each other in playoffs? Even if they don't, I think a rivalry has been born. And Now There Is Just One 6-0 Team The Green Bay Packers dispatched the struggling St. Louis Rams 24-3 at Lambeau Field to notch their sixth win of the season against no defeats. Aaron Rodgers passed for 310-3-1, which was just another day at the office for him. Greg Jennings (6-82-0) and Jordy Nelson (2-104-1) led the potent-as-usual Green Bay passing attack. Donald Driver and James Jones each hauled in a touchdown pass. After coming within one victory of winning the NFC West last season, the 0-5 Rams have been a huge disappointment. The team did not add any proven offensive playmakers to help young Sam Bradford, and the defense has inexplicably regressed quite a bit. Tabbed by some as a high-end No. 2 fantasy quarterback during the preseason, Bradford has notched two 300-yard passing games but has tossed just three touchdown passes in five games, which barely makes him a fantasy starter. The loss of Danny Amendola (elbow) obviously has been an issue, although the Rams are hoping that injury-prone Danario Alexander (6-91-0 against the Packers) can fill that...

Week 4: Waiver Wire Woes fantasysharks.com Fri 9/30/11 6:20 AM

Welcome to Week 4 of the Brew Crew Corner. There has been a ton of injures, and on top of that the bye weeks are not too far down the road. There always seems to be a hot player coming off a great game that is the flavor of the week. The problem is in most leagues it is either the person fastest to snatch that player up or the worst owner in the league that has waiver priority over you. So what can you do if you're 3-0 and have injuries or bye week fill-ins to worry about? The key is to target the players that are still under the radar but have a chance to make an impact later on. Think of it as a second draft of sleepers. One such player is Steve Smith of the Eagles. He's still available in a good amount of leagues, and although he had a couple of catches last week, he was targeted five times compared to Jeremy Maclin, who had seven targets, and DeSean Jackson, who had six. The team will work Smith into the offense more and more and soon he will be an every week starter. Dane Sanzenbacher is another interesting pick up as he is the most targeted receiver on the Chicago Bears inside the red zone. Already he's been thrown to six times. That is more than all the other Bears' wide receivers combined. I suggest that you start now preparing for your upcoming bye weeks. The next couple of weeks will be harder to pick players up as other owners will be in a panic trying to roster a starting lineup, which will increase the chances of you missing out on a player. The Golden Mug Award Awarded to the fantasy player who came through for their team. Wes Welker -- 16 receptions, 217 yards, 2 TD. Welker is having a dominant start to the season and is currently the top scoring fantasy player in the league. He definitely has to be in the conversation for Fantasy MVP if he continues to post these types of numbers. He was targeted 20 times in the game and caught 16 of them. He's fantasy gold in points per reception leagues. Torrey Smith -- 5 receptions, 152 yards, 3 TD. Smith is this week's hot waiver target and he stepped in for an injured Lee Evens to post monster numbers. He went without a catch in the first two games so you need to temper your expectations because he could end up being a one-week wonder. Darren McFadden -- 19 carries, 171 yards, 2 TD. McFadden has been putting up serious numbers over the past three weeks and is currently the No. 1 running back. Hopefully he can stay healthy with the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns and Kansas ...

In The Spotlight: Week 3 fantasysharks.com Mon 9/26/11 9:06 AM

Here are the top six storylines from Week 3. Drum roll, please... 6. SOME STUDS WERE DUDS What do Hakeem Nicks (3-25-0), Philip Rivers (266-0-2), Steve Smith (Car) (2-15-0), Frank Gore (17-42-0 with no catches), BenJarvus Green-Ellis (9-16-0 with no catches), Michael Turner (11-20-0 with no catches), Deion Branch (0-0-0), Rashard Mendenhall (18-37-0) and Santonio Holmes (1-19-0) all have in common? They torpedoed quite a few fantasy teams. Tom Brady throws for 387 yards and four touchdowns, and Branch posts a goose egg. I still can't get over that one. 5. NEW ORLEANS RALLIES TO UPEND HOUSTON After facing the Kerry Collins-led Indianapolis Colts and a Miami Dolphins team that had a letdown following an emotional Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans defense clashed with a real offense -- the New Orleans Saints. The result -- Houston's revamped defense needs some more revamping following a 40-33 loss in which the Texans allowed 23 fourth-quarter points. The Houston offense, however, was fine, as expected, with Ben Tate (19-82-0 and 1-8-0) filling in for Arian Foster in the short term. I was not big on Tate when the Texans drafted him, but the second-year pro is far more explosive than I had originally thought. 4. THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS CHOKE AGAIN And Minnesota fans can't blame it on now-former head coach Brad Childress. Two weeks ago, the Vikings flubbed a 17-0 lead and lost 24-20 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Week 3, the Vikings choked away a 20-10 cushion and lost 23-20 to the upstart Detroit Lions in overtime. On the bright side, Donovan McNabb showed a fantasy pulse, throwing for 201-1-0, which was his best outing in a Vikings uniform. 3. THE DREAM TEAM OFFENSE LOOKED NIGHTMARISH The Philadelphia Eagles were coming off an intense, emotional Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and they played like it. How else could they lose 29-16 to the sputtering New York Giants? Neither Michael Vick (broken non-throwing hand) nor Jeremy Maclin (hamstring) was able to play until the end of their team's surprising 29-16 drubbing at the hands of Big Blue. What happened to the all-star Asante Samuel-led secondary? Eli Manning tossed four touchdown passes! Come on! Eagles fans, I don't mean to pile on, but the offensive line blocking still needs work, and the linebacker play was terrible. How do you give up a 40-yard touchdown pass to the "speedy" Brandon Jacobs? By the way, Vick is considered questionable to play in Week 4, and I suspect...

Fantasy Intelligence Report: News Nuggets, Week 2 Reactions, and Ul... fantasysharks.com Sat 9/24/11 3:06 PM

Let's just get to it. N.N. -- News Nuggets The biggest news as Sunday approaches is coming out of Philadelphia, where it looks like quarterback Michael Vick may play against the Giants. According to the Courier-Post Vick was given the o.k. to return to practice from the neurologist and looked just fine, according to wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. "He looked good, man," Maclin said of Vick in practice. "He looked fine, very in control of the huddle, in control of what was going on, in control of the offense. He's in good shape." "That's what you want out of your quarterback," Maclin added. "You want him to want to be out there; you want him to put everything on his shoulders, and he wants to be the guy to take us where we need to go. So obviously we're going to rally behind him, and we definitely want him out there." While this is the great news Eagles' fans and fantasy owners were waiting anxiously to hear, on the flipside, there is still some concern surrounding how to ensure Vick minimizes the number of hits he takes. It's something that is definitely on the mind of offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. "I'd like to minimize that, and he'd like to minimize that," Mornhinweg said. "Some of it is his style of play, and certainly you don't want to take that style of play away from him, but I do want to minimize the hits, and there are several things we can do there." One of two things will happen here. Either Vick will cut way back on the number of times he takes off running and over-compensate for the injury, or he's going to go all out and play reckless all the time. It won't be anything in between, which will be good or bad depending on who you are. And in Tampa Bay, it looks as though wide receiver Mike Williams is having a hard time finding openings to catch the ball. According to the St Petersburg Times defenses are doing everything they can to keep the ball out of his hands, including putting two defensive backs on him. "When (defenses) go to Cover 2, the corner, instead of dropping down into his zone, he's following me," Williams said. "So, it's like (there's) a safety over the top and the corner's coming, too. Even the ball that I did catch (Sunday versus Minnesota), I got hit by the safety, too. It's always two defenders where I'm at. I just have to adjust to it. Hopefully we keep getting wins and whatever happens, happens." Uh-oh. This is not the news fantasy owners need to hear two games in to the season. Williams has been a fantasy ...

Touch Me, Baby: Week 2 Targets and Touches Report brunoboys.net Wed 9/21/11 5:45 PM

Anything can happen in Week 1. That is why it's best not to make knee jerk decisions based on guys not producing for your fantasy team after one week. Week 2 is where we take a step back and assess whether what we saw in our inaugural week of the season was real or just a mirage. Guys like Darren Sproles, David Nelson and Scott Chandler proved their big first week's were not flukes while Reggie Bush, Percy Harvin and Jeremy Maclin exhibited otherwise. We'll go over these and other storylines, such as Jamaal Charles' devastating season-ending injury in this week's Touch Me, Baby.
