Wright (concussion) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens. Even if Wright had been at full health entering the season opener, the Bengals still might have made him a healthy inactive. Once his concussion symptoms subside and he's able to return to practice, Wright will likely slot in as the team's fifth receiver until Marvin Jones (foot) is deemed fit to play.

Wright beat out Cobi Hamilton for the fifth and final wide receiver spot on the Bengals' roster, the The Cincinnati Enquirer's Paul Dehner Jr. reports. The report notes that Wright could still be released, as the Bengals may prefer their pick of other teams' unwanted players over their in-house fifth receiver. With Marvin Jones (foot) expected to return at some point before mid-season, Wright could eventually land on the practice squad, even if he sticks on the roster for the next few weeks. His role on offense will likely be minimal to non-existent, but he could contribute on special teams.

The Bengals have been impressed with seventh-round WR James Wright on offense. It's notable because Wright was a strict special teamer at LSU. "(I) talked to him and said, 'Look, I know what you can do on special teams, now you've got to play wide receiver,'" sid WRs coach James Urban. "He's embraced it. ... We'll see once we get the pads on, but it's been encouraging." Despite Urban's talk, Wright's 53-man roster odds live and die with his special-teams prowess.

Bengals signed seventh-round WR James Wright to a four-year contract. Wright was a pure special teams player as a senior at LSU after catching just 18 passes the year before. He won't play on offense in Cincinnati and will have to display otherworldly kick-covering attributes to stick on the 53-man roster.
