With the Saints signing Adrian Peterson (knee) last week-and drafting tailback Alvin Kamara in the third round of the NFL Draft, The Times-Picayune's Larry Holder speculates that the team's likely plan is to deploy a three-headed attack at running back similar to the Saints' potent 2009 and 2011 backfields.
EDGE Analysis
Both the 2009 and 2011 teams finished sixth in the league in rushing, but head coach Sean Payton's three-man committees were a nightmare for fantasy owners, with no Saints running back scoring more than six touchdowns or rushing for 800 yards. This year, it is expected that Ingram and Peterson will serve as the more traditional running backs, running between the tackles, while Kamara will compete with Travaris Cadet to be the third-down or satellite back. However, it is still unclear how the touches between the backs will be divided. After rushing for a career-high 1,043 yards and scoring ten total touchdowns, Ingram is likely to see the most snaps given his familiarity with the Saints' system, but he will undoubtedly lose carries to Peterson and receptions to Kamara or Cadet, hampering his value.

He lost carries to Hightower the last two years so what's the difference? One guy is in his prime and the other is trying to keep the window fracked open a little longer.

I'm staying far away from this backfield unless one of the three get hurt.

Not many backfields have a 3 down back. You can only play the odds. Odds are if one guy gets hurt, the other won't be on the waiver wire unless it's a very shallow league.

I hear you, but having the 3 on the roster really makes a mess of this backfield for fantasy purposes. Ingram has been their primary back so he will get his, Peterson wasn't signed to sit the bench so he will get his. And you don't draft a top rated rookie RB unless you plan on playing... so he will get his. I will let the other fantasy coaches take their chances here. And I do agree all three of these backs will be on rosters in deep leagues. But I am also willing to bet they won't be in the starting lineup much after week 5 unless one of them stands out from the other. Guessing which one it will be is not going to be easy. If I were to rank the order, it would go Ingram, Peterson, Kamara. But the three could be mixed and matched. As for Cadet, he's the odd man out in my opinion but could get a lot of the passing down work. NIGHTMARE scenario if you asked me.

Pretty sure kamara will be the passing down back like cadet was. Also putting my money on Ingram over AP for

Most carries and yards.

Agree, so maybe we can narrow this down to Ingram and Kamara as the two key backs to own in this backfield. I prefer to avoid it. Ingram only got 6 TDs last season and was the clear lead back. He will be lucky to repeat that this season.

Yeah, I will only draft if I have the need along with very limited choices. I did keep Ingram in some leagues and will stick with him as he still ranked top 10 with only 6 TD's.

Actually, my statement about 6 TDs is inaccurate, he also had 4 receiving TDs. That's probably why he ended up in the top 10.
