Wally's World: Pre-Combine Edition fantasysharks.com Wed 2/11/15 7:00 AM

The NFL Combine is fast approaching and I am a junkie for it. Sure it’s a glorified dog and pony show but it's also hours and hours of Mike Mayock waxing poetic. I have been a Mayock slappy for a very long time and am not ashamed to admit it. After digging out from yet another significant snowfall, it’s time for another look at some things that this old pundit finds interesting as we head into the 2015 fantasy football season. That was quite a Super Bowl, eh? Yes, I believe that Seattle should have run the ball on second down. Still doesn’t diminish how enjoyable the game was to watch (unless you happen to be a Seattle fan) and the rollercoaster ride the second half was. Getting some help is a smart move by Johnny Manziel. Get a handle on your demons and then deal with whether or not a viable NFL career is in the making. Manziel’s teammate is another story and I fear that Josh Gordon just doesn’t get it. This latest transgression could be the end. His play down the stretch (before the team suspended him for Week 17) doesn’t help his cause one bit. Don’t send out letters of explanations and excuses. Just get your life in order. Hey, Justin Blackmon. If you need an example of what not to do moving forward, Gordon is providing the perfect blueprint. It should be interesting to see if Marc Trestman running the offense in Baltimore boosts Joe Flacco’s fantasy value. My early thoughts are that it will significantly increase Flacco’s production. The microfracture surgery that Vontaze Burfict underwent has me worried about his future. Cincinnati may reduce his role to limit the wear and tear factor, capping his Individual Defensive Player (IDP) value. If it plays out that DeMarco Murray walks via free agency, I’m all in on whoever takes over the lead back role for Dallas. I would love to see Dallas select former Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon in the first round as ESPN’s Todd McShay had things shake out in his 2.0 mock. Yes, I own Gordon in a league where we draft college players. Don’t forget about Michael Floyd in Arizona. The quarterback situation for Arizona last season rendered most of their receiving game useless. I look for him to bounce back in 2015. I look for Jace Amaro, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Eric Ebron to make big jumps in their sophomore seasons. These kids are too talented to not have a fantasy impact moving forward. Although I must admit, I’d feel even better about a couple of them if we knew who their quarterbacks were going to be. He may never live up to the hype that was heaped on him a couple of years ago but I am still going to target Giovani Bernard heavily in my 2015 drafts. Especially in points per reception formats. Another player that I am very high on in 2015 is San Diego wide receiver Keenan Allen. Look for Philip Rivers to lean heavily on the third-year wide receiver that has just scraped his fantasy potential. The “ Zac Ertz is going to be the next big thing at tight end” train has left the station and I am not boarding. Too many options in a Chip Kelly orchestrated offense and Ertz is never going to be a major one. Call me crazy (plenty of folks have done so) but I firmly believe that Russell Wilson finishes as a top-5 fantasy scoring quarterback in 2015. The man simply gets the job done and can make every throw while adding the threat of running the football. He reminds me of Fran Tarkenton and that’s not a bad thing at all. While I am waxing poetic about players I am intrigued by heading into next season, I give you Dan “Boom” Herron who sits in a very favorable position for the Indianapolis Colts. Herron showed enough down the stretch and in the playoffs that the Colts can feel safe with him toting the rock as the No. 1 guy entering next season. Fumbling issues can be corrected and Herron is a sneaky good receiver as well. With new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips calling the shots it appears DeMarcus Ware will likely return to an outside linebacker designation. This is not good news for his IDP value. He’ll get after the quarterback plenty but won’t rack up enough tackles to make him a value pick in standard scoring formats. I admit that his Super Bowl performance has me taking a long hard look at wide receiver Chris Matthews. Seattle needs to improve at the wide receiver position and might just have a very nice in-house option. Julian Edelman is one tough son of a gun. Makes it hard to remember the player that he replaced as Tom Brady’s go-to guy. What was his name again? Reports that the San Francisco 49ers will be utilizing more read option plays makes Colin Kaepernick an intriguing fantasy option once again. His rushing ability was one of his major assets prior to last season and needs to be exploited. Sigh … I miss the Jonas Gray era. I am bummed that Kurt Warner did not make the Hall of Fame on his first ballot. An unhealthy man crush that led me to select or trade for him at some point every season (even the New York Giants debacle) led to a few fantasy championships. Pretty sure he gets in at some point. So it appears that Clay Matthews is going to continue to see some snaps at inside linebacker next year for Green Bay. Makes him a more valuable IDP commodity and deserving of low-end LB2 consideration. If Ryan Mallett re-signs with Houston and secures the starting gig, he could be a very nice late-round selection as a backup fantasy quarterback. Low-risk/high-reward potential at a place of value. My gut tells me Peyton Manning will be back in 2015 and recent reports have him working out already with just that intention. Manning’s age and recent nagging injury issues will have me avoiding him in drafts. Let another owner take that risk.
